Mrs.Kowalski
Mrs.Kowalski lives in na old Polish neighborhood in Chicago. She espeaks a little English, but
usully she speak Polish.
She reads the Polish newspaper. She listens to Polish radio progrms. She shops at the Polish
grocery store around the corner fron her apartment building. And every day she visits her
friends and neighbors and talk about life back in “the old country”.
She’s upset about her son , Michael, end his wife, Kathy. They live in a small suburb outside
the city. They speak a little Polish, but usully they speak English. They read American
newspapers. They listen to American radio programs. They shop at big suburban supermarkets
and shopping malls. And when they visit their friends and neighbors, they Always speak
English.
In fact, Michael speaks Polish only when he calls his mother on the telefone, or when he visits
them every weekend.
Mrs.Kowalski is sad because her son speaks so little Polish. She afraid she’s forgetting his
language, his culture, and his coutry.
