CASE STUDY SITUATION:

  1. Reflect: Reflect on theories of language learning and teaching. Use these questions to write a journal entry.
    • Think about the theories of language teaching and learning outlined in this lesson. Which of these theories reflect your own thinking?
    • Which influence your teaching practice the most strongly?
    • Cite examples from your teaching practice that reflect the application of the theories.
  2. Discover: Review several language learning textbooks to see how theory and method are linked. Write up your findings in a brief report.
    • Choose three different textbooks.
    • Examine the way the textbooks present content and structure students' learning.
    • Describe the approach, design, and procedure most consistently used in each text.
    • Discuss how these methods link to theories about language learning and teaching.
    • Write up your findings in a brief report.
  3. Classroom Research: Determine how your own beliefs about language learning and teaching match your classroom practice. Write up your findings in a brief report.
    • Write a description of your own personal philosophy of language learning and teaching. Discuss ways you put this philosophy into practice.
    • Videotape your class or ask a colleague to observe you.
    • Compare your observation results with your earlier description of how you put beliefs into practice.
    • Explore any areas that do not seem to be consistent.

RESPONSE:

I chose Classroom Research. In my opinion, students learn by building on prior knowledge and collaborating with each other, that's why I prefer to make small group discussions and team-based activities than instructor-led lectures. I believe that students learn a second language in a better way when they feel comfortable in their classes and when they feel they're given as many opportunities as possible to participate. Therefore, I feel morally obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest of expectations for each and every one of the students. I also try to create an atmosphere that is not only nurturing, but challenging and motivating, creating different moments for interaction, so taking into consideration my students’ different learning styles, interests, expectations, needs, and reasons for study is a must for me. Different channels must be used for taking advantage of every single interaction. However, this goal must be approached without students knowing because when they feel evaluated, interaction may end up being stressful for them. Don't get me wrong, students should receive
