PMBOK

PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) is a document created by the PMI (Project Management Institute) that contains processes, best practices, terminologies, and guidelines for successful project management. More than a methodology, what the PMBOK shares are good practices and guidelines that allow good monitoring of projects and their stages, throughout their lives, thanks to the experience of professionals who have already proven their effectiveness. It helps both people who start in project management, since it explains the key processes with a view to adapting them to the methodology that each manager decides; And it also works for the most experienced, since each new edition of the guide incorporates innovations that respond to the most current tools and needs. The most recent edition, which was already shared in English from the PMI page, is shorter than the previous ones and is more aimed at creating value in business through projects, so beyond the deliverables, what matters are the results that are achieved with them. We could say then that there are five phases, or five groups, according to this guide:

  1. Initiation: This is when a project is born. It is the process during which it is defined what it will consist of, and the justification is clearly exposed to the company and the interested parties. It is approved once the feasibility and value of the plan are deemed relevant, usually through the analysis of two documents:
  • Business case document, where the potential financial and value benefits are explained.
  • Feasibility study, which discusses project goals, schedule, and costs that help determine whether the plan should be carried out.
  1. Planning: The purpose of the project plan is for the teams to have a direction to achieve the results. In it, we talk in detail about how to obtain human, material and financing resources; It also presents actions to prevent possible negative scenarios, and what needs to be done so that the project ends in the agreed time, within budget.
  2. Execution: The project is implemented. Those involved meet to explain responsibilities, objectives and how the completion of a task impacts others. In this way all people understand the importance of each other's work and know who to turn to in case of obstacles that interrupt the flow. We recommend that you use tools that allow you to automatically record the results that are achieved, with indicators that make it clear to everyone if the management of time, resources and personnel is efficient.
  3. Monitoring and control: This step are, most of the time, simultaneous with the previous one, and is a great idea to act in case a problem arises. Or, even, if it is
