CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, and the scope and limitation of the study. Background of the study Education in its broader sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a group of people were transferred from one generation to the next by conducting trainings, researches, and instructions. Education usually takes place under a supervision or guidance of others. Any experiences that can influence others on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be contemplated as educational. Nelson Mandela once said that “Education is a key to success”. This is a certain belief for others but as time passed by, the education that we have been for a long time was no longer recognize compare to other countries. In 2013, Department of Education (DepEd) changed the education curriculum and K to 12 curriculums brings to throughout the country which covers different academic tracks: General Academic Strand (GAS), Technical and Vocational Livelihood (TVL), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Home Economics (HE), Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), and more. Nevertheless, among of this academic strand, STEM education is distinguished as one of the high-level strands. STEM education is a wide-ranging approach to learning that focuses in the four subjects: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The STEM program is offered by specialized high schools, whether public or private schools supervised by the DepEd. Meanwhile, STEM education scares many students because it is known and

modernization. STEM courses now become more challenging and rigorous manner. Students’ awareness of STEM fields and occupation is still pursued. Student exploration on STEM related careers begin once the learner steps at the Senior High School. More stress is place in bridging in school and out of school STEM opportunities. Additionally, STEM education were really a perfect and right way to achieve the advancement that we`ve always wanted. Having a secured future for ourselves is not impossible to have through STEM education. This study therefore is to be conducted to give knowledge about the benefits of STEM strand as a preparatory stage for College. Also, the study aims to support students to plan ahead for Grade-11 and for the STEM students to choose an appropriate College Courses. Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the benefits of choosing STEM strand as a preparatory stage for College for Grade 11 STEM students of MinSCAT Laboratory High School Calapan City Campus. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the common factors that affect the choice of Grade 11-STEM students to choose STEM strand?
  2. As a Grade 11 STEM student, what is your own perception about the strand that you chose?
  3. How do the benefits and advantages that you will get from the STEM strand help Grade 11-STEM students to prepare for college?

Significance of the Study The findings of this study will be beneficial for the following: For the institution , they will be able to think in abstruse and more complex ways to help the STEM students to be critical and creative thinkers to prepare for college and encourage the Grade 10 students to choose STEM strand as their preparatory stage for College. For the teachers , it will allow them to know the coverage and limits of the intellectual capacity of each of the students of STEM strand for the way they will approach them as they enrich their skills and prepare them for College. For the students , the result of the study will allow them to acquire more knowledge and to know the benefits of STEM strand, helping them to have an idea of related courses in College that they will take and which are suitable for them to choose. For the future researchers , the result of this study will help them encourage conducting a study for further students’ academic performance in STEM strand and will serves as necessary reference material for those who will conduct a related study. Scope and Limitations The study focuses on determining the benefits of choosing STEM strand as a preparatory stage for College conducted during the Academic Year 2018-2019. The major task of this research is to answer specific questions presented in the statement of the problem. This is limited to its complete reliance on the tests and interviews of the researches as an instrument for gathering data to know and determine the benefits of choosing STEM strand as a preparatory stage for College.

CHAPTER II

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents the review of literature and studies, theoretical and conceptual model of the study, and the definition of terms used. Review of Related Literature and Studies Related Literature. A number of journals, articles and websites which have some significance and relation to this study were reviewed in order to get insights on how to conduct this research studies. STEM education mainly focuses in these four major subjects: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This is implemented in both public and private schools. However, many of the high school students were scared to choose STEM because they perceive it as a difficult and demanding strand. According to the recent study conducted by Oliveira and Roberts (2013), since STEM education executed in schools in France, the country remains concerned that the proportion is not high enough to satisfy ongoing economic needs, the proportion of the students in choosing the field of STEM education and the problem of low and declining participants in STEM education persists too. The science major strand of study if may perceive to be the most prestigious, leading to any further studies they may choose. However, not all graduates are motivated by passion for science. This research reveals the factors that influence the motivation of the students to choose the field of STEM---home background, attitudes, and self-efficacy.

This study is connected because it broadens the knowledge of the students and also the researches about the factors that affect the perception of the students to choose the STEM strand as their preparatory stage for college. However, some STEM-educated choose this field of learning as their primary guide particularly in the issues that we have today that requires a technological understanding. Moreover, one latest work conducted by English (2016) argued that with more equitable representations of four disciplines in studies to advance STEM learning. Although the integration of STEM education and disciplines is increasingly advocated in literature, it still appeared with mixed findings and tend to mislead directions for the STEM advancement. This work targets the STEM integration in a developing field with respect to advancing curriculum development and students outcomes. For instance, having more studies on how students learning outcomes arise not only in different forms of STEM integration but also from specific disciplines that are being integrated. On the other hand, Lynch (2017) gave a further explanation in his work why the field of STEM education that the learners to choose. He discussed that in today’s era, almost all of the opportunities and high demand jobs were focused in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Many careers today do not require an employees who achieved a higher degree of education, instead they are looking and requiring for employees who are STEM-educated. As an employee, consumer, and as a citizen, we need to be able to involve in intellectual discourse about the fast-paced and ever evolving technological world and this can be achieved by engaging the students to invest in STEM education.

Additionally, as stated by Estanto (2017), implementation of STEM program in senior high school is not only for the reinforcement of the education system in the Philippines. It also aims to prepare the secondary students to master the prerequisite skills needed in professional courses for those who will take up college courses that are inclined in this strand. This concept leads the researchers to have a wider understanding about the impacts of STEM strand to students in terms of planning for College. Related Studies A recent study conducted by Acorda, Buala et, al (2018) emphasized that STEM education is significant not only for the students but also for the future of the country, Philippines. With this study, it is cleared that STEM students on graduates are in demand and needed in the society. It shows that most student choose this field because of advanced education in Science and Mathematics, and it sharpens individual’s Intelligence Quotient (IQ). This study is related because it reveals the factors why most of grade 11 students choose STEM curriculum above so many strands that were offered. On the other hand, it exposed that this education can benefit them to achieve the best career that they seek in the future. According to the study conducted by SunStar, STEM education encourages students in the field in becoming an innovator. It reveals that STEM is a big foundation of the future in producing a competitive people. Besides, STEM education is relevant and productive particularly in the technological disruptors. This study is somehow related to

the researcher’s study because it presents advantage of STEM education in improving the society. Additionally, society can access advanced ideas from STEM program. Moreover, one recent study by Olivarez (2012) argued that STEM program has a great impact on academic achievement. Also this study provided a comparative data that examine the achievement of STEM program and non-STEM program. It reveals that STEM program can outperform the non-STEM program in relation in the field of Science, Mathematics and Reading achievement. The study is connected because it assesses the efficiency of STEM on student achievement on standardized evaluation. On the other hand, Brown, Reardon et, al. (2011) reveals that STEM education bring such assistance in economic and educational effectiveness. Also having an advanced knowledge in Math and Science can contribute to increased problem solving skills, critical thinking, and analytical thinking of the students. This is study is connected to the researchers’ study in a way wherein it further explains that STEM comprised many field in technology education. The study is related because integrating STEM can be beneficial in Science and Math fields and it will be used in connecting the curriculum in the real-world problems. One latest study conducted by Sahin (2017) examines that most of the students who choose STEM are the one who had competencies in Math and Science. Also it reveals that students whose parents had a college degree in U.S. most likely choose STEM strand. The study exposes that students select STEM because of the experiences, expectations and influence. Conversely, it shows the result that STEM strand is highly recommended for some who had efficacy in the field.
