There is vs. There are

We use There is with singular nouns. Ex : There is a book on the desk. The singular noun is BOOK. We use There are with plural nouns. Ex : There are apples in the fridge. The plural noun is APPLES. Negative statements We use ISN'T / IS NOT or AREN'T / ARE NOT to form negative statements. Examples : ∑ There isn't a book on the desk. ∑ There aren't apples in the fridge. Questions with There is and There are. Follow this rule below to form questions with There is and There are. Rule : Is there + singular nouns Ex : Is there an orange on the counter? Short answers : (+) Yes, there is. (-) No, there isn't. Rule : Are there + plural nouns Ex : Are there 2 chairs in the room? (+) Yes, there are. (-) No, there aren't.

Some vs. Any

We use SOME in affirmative statements and ANY in questions in negative statements. Examples : (+) There is some butter in the jar. (+) There are some potatoes in the bag. (?) Is there any rice in the bowl? (?) Are there any apples in the fridge? Note : Questions with ANY can be answered in both ways below: Examples : Are there any onions on the counter? (+) Yes, there are or Yes, there are some. Be careful : Always use the long form of THERE IS in affirmative short answers. Examples : Is there a book on the shelf? ( Correct ) Yes, there is. ( Incorrect ) Yes, there's.

Demonstrative adjectives: This, That, These and Those

We use THIS with one close object. ( Singular ) Ex : This book here. We use THAT with one distant object. ( Singular ) Ex : That book over there. THESE is the plural of THIS , and it is used with two or more close objects. Ex : These books here. THOSE is the plural of THAT , and it is used with two or more distant objects. Ex : Those books over there.

The Imperative

We use the original form or also called base form of verbs to form the IMPERATIVE in English.

Examples : ∑ Open the door. ∑ Close the window. ∑ Move your feet. To form negative imperatives we use DON'T + the verb base form. Examples : ∑ Don't open the door. ∑ Don't close the window. ∑ Don't move your feet.

Be careful :

Never use NOT to form negative imperatives. ( Correct ) : Don't open the door. ( Incorrect ): Not open the door.

Adjectives placement

Adjectives are always used before nouns in English. We never use them after nouns. Examples : ( Correct ) I live in a beautiful apartment. ( NOUN ) ( Incorrect ) I live in an apartment beautiful. ( ADJECTIVE ) Adjectives never agree in numbers in English. The noun always gets the plural form, and never the adjective. Examples : Don't say : He has three (3) bigs brothers. Say : He has three (3) big brothers. Examples of adjectives: ∑ Good ∑ Great ∑ Wonderful ∑ Happy ∑ Nice ∑ Tall ∑ Short ∑ Big ∑ Heavy

∑ Sad ∑ Nasty ∑ Sweet ∑ Bitter ∑ Ugly ∑ Beautiful ∑ Handsome ∑ Pretty ∑ Intelligent
