WHEN IS IT USED?

A year ago , I ate in that restaurant. In 1970 , The Beatles split up. When you were a child you liked apples. Sentences in which the idea, act, or state has already been completed. The time of completion does not matter, the only important thing is that you talk about something that no longer happens or exists in the present.

WHAT IS IT?

It is one of the most important verb tenses in the English language and, unlike Spanish, in that verbs in the past have very different conjugations. INTERMEDIATE

PAST SIMPLE: USES

Did you watch that film yesterday? He left at the end of November. When they were young, they hated meat. We use the past simple to talk about definite time in the past (often we specify when something happened, e.g. yesterday, three weeks ago, last year, when I was young ):

AT, ON AND IN (TIME)

with particular points on the clock: with particular points in the day: with dates: with a singular day of the week to refer to one occasion: We use at : I’ll see you at five o’clock. The helicopter took off at midday and headed for the island. We use on: We moved into this house on 25 October 1987. I’ve got to go to London on Friday.

PAST SIMPLE: FORM

For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form of the verb (work– worked) or -d if the verb already ends in e (move–moved).

PRONUNCIATION OF

For regular verbs, there are three possible pronunciations of

  • ed endings. 1Crowd - crowded - Pronounced / krow - did / 2 Stop - stopped - is pronounced / stopt / 3 Hug - hugged - Pronounced / hugd /

IRREGULAR VERBS

The verb form is the same for all persons (I, you, she, he, it, we, they), and we make questions and negatives with irregular verbs in the same ways as for regular verbs..
