Trends in Crime – Peak Years, Violent Crimes and Serial Killers

According to World Bank statistics, crime rates in Canada has seen a spike in the recent years
and is heading upwards which is not a good look for a country’s reputation for many other
reasons as it affects the sense of safety of the citizens, housing markets, tourism appeal and the
overall quality of life. Since, the number of violent crimes is decreasing in the states but are seen
increasing in Canada according to statistics Canada. My application is going to go through the
database of all the criminal records provided to the public and find the various trends and
patterns in violent crimes, serial killers and the peak years and their impact on the country’s
various aspects.
The Issue that I believe that I might encounter during the making of this project would be as
follows:
Accurate Data: To find the trends in crimes in various cities and provinces of Canada for
that acquiring the most accurate database.
Filtering Data: Regardless of what we have been thought in this course, filtering the data
for this project is going to be very tedious and difficult as I would have to take in
consideration the following factors –
oLooking for Patterns
oIncrease in crime rates against a certain group of people
oIncrease in Copycat Killers
oCity specific crimes
My plan for going about this issue for my application would be to research and look for more
publicly available databases for acquiring the most accurate and precise data that would be useful
for my research. The data should not only be precise but also in accordance with the
requirements of my research.
After I have selected the databases that I would want to work with, then comes the issues of
filtering it like looking for patterns in the databases such as increased crime rates in a city, or if
there is a noticeable spike in the crime rate against a specific gender, race, nationality or age
group to identify serial killer or copycats who are trying to recreate the horrors that were cause
by the wrongdoers, or even if there is a sudden increase in specific kind of a crime my
application would identify it and also take into consideration the trends of the crimes that are
happening in the premises of a city.
