LESSON 1

How do we spot a trend?

  • (^) Sweet spot - the point at which an indicator or policy provides the optimal balance of costs and benefits.
  • (^) Innovation - defined as the "carrying out of new combinations" that includes "the introduction of new goods, new methods of production, the opening of new markets, the conquest of new sources of supply, and the carrying out of a new organization of any industry."
  • (^) Feature - a distinctive attribute or aspect of something.

Terminologies

  • (^) Trends towards/to: “We’ve seen a trend towards more violent films this year.”
  • (^) Trends in: “The latest trend in popular music is....”
  • (^) An upward/downward trend: “Today’s figures continue an upward trend in the stock market.”
  • (^) Follow a trend: “Everyone seems to be following the trend for straight shiny hairstyles.”
  • (^) Buck a trend (not to be affected by a general trend): to go against the trend. “Dell announced profits up by 30%, bucking the trend in the troubled high-tech market.”

Spotting a Trend

The Fundamental Trend Elements

1.EASY Trends do not require many adjustments on the part of subscribers. It is smooth and straightforward to follow. 2.CONSISTENT Trends generate uniform and tangible results. Unlike fads which claim to deliver results in the often unrealistic timeframe, trends are steady and dependable.

Features of Trends

  1. SUSTAINABLE Trends exist and can be maintained for a long time. Unlike fads which are brief and fleeting (exist in a short time.), trends are for the long term.
  2. BROAD APPLICATION Trends are consumed by a large group of people from different sectors of society and various walks of life. Unlike fads which are contained in one segment of society, trends almost have a general acceptance among people.

Strategic Thinking

  • (^) it means going with one's first instinct and reaching decisions quickly based on automatic cognitive processes.
