Ethics in Field Research
Research Ethics
The general principles that guide
ethical practice in research are
essentially the same as those that
guide Field Studies.
Autonomy
Refers to the notion that each
individual has the right to privacy
and dignity that should be protected
at all times.
Participants should be able to make
their own decisions to participate in
research and the people who are
unable to make this decisions should
be protected.
Operationalized through the process
of informed consent.

Justice
Refers to the notion that all research
participants should be treated fairly,
equally, and nobly during the entire
course of the research process.
In procedural term, it requires that
the researcher’s identity and the
research methods are transparent,
and that no segment of the
community is unfairly burdened or
forces discrimination.
It also imposes obligations towards
the individuals who are not able to
protect their own interests, and
therefore should be protected from
any exploitation for the sake of
research and the progress of
knowledge.
Ex:
LGBTQ in a work setting survey
People in prison
Beneficence
Requires researchers to evaluate all
physical, social, psychological, or
medical harms or risks that their
participants may face by virtue of
being in the project.
General guideline of ethical
standards
They should make every possible
attempt to minimize these harms and
maximize benefits.
Requires to do good ad to always act
in the best interests of the
participants.
Includes being honest with the
participants.
Safety
Is this research harm the
participants?
Participants should not be subjected
to unnecessary investigations
Participants welfare as the first
consideration
Demands that researchers develop
and maintain skills and knowledge.

Ethics in Field Research

Research Ethics

 The general principles that guide ethical practice in research are essentially the same as those that guide Field Studies.

Autonomy

Dispensing with Informed Consent for Research

Where research would not be reasonably create distress or harm involves:  The study of normal educational practices, curricula, or classroom management methods conducted in educational settings.  Only anonymous questionnaires, naturalistic observations. Or archival research for which disclosure of responses would not place participants at risk of criminal or civil liability or damage their financial standing, employability, or reputation, and confidentiality is protected.  Work setting  The study of factors related to job or organization effectiveness conducted in organizational settings for which there is no risk to partcipants’ employability.  Where otherwise permitted by law or federal or institutional regulations.
