Bogart–Bacall syndrome A voice condition called Bogart-Bacall syndrome (BBS) is brought on by mistreating or overusing the vocal chords. During World War II, presenter Jack Brown of the Armed Forces Radio Services conducts interviews with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The symptoms of BBS include primarily an extremely deep or harsh voice, or dysphonia, and vocal exhaustion. Those who talk in a low-pitched voice are most frequently afflicted, especially if they have poor breath control and vocal control. The condition can affect both men and women. Signs and symptoms Signs and symptoms of Bogart–Bacall Syndrome can appear differently depending on the vocal use of the individual. In singers, symptoms may appear more subtly due to their extreme sensitivity to small changes in the laryngeal mechanism and being able to control their laryngeal muscles more than the average person. This vocal control can compensate for irritation, weakness, or change in vibration patterns for the vocal folds. Signs and symptoms will vary on a case-by-case basis and will depend on vocal strain and the degree of daily use. Women are also more susceptible than men to experience heightened symptoms due to their increased likelihood of speaking at a lower pitch in professional settings Symptoms and signs Depending on the person's vocal usage, Bogart-Bacall Syndrome symptoms and signs may manifest differently. Due to their high sensitivity to even the smallest alterations in the laryngeal mechanism and their greater ability to modulate their laryngeal muscles than the normal person, vocalists may exhibit symptoms more quietly. This vocal control can make up for discomfort, a lack of strength, or a shift in the vocal folds' vibrational patterns. Signs and symptoms will vary according on the specific circumstances, voice strain, and level of regular use. Due to their propensity to talk at a lower pitch in professional situations, women are more likely than males to develop intensified symptoms. The following are examples of Bogart-Bacall symptoms:[10]
voice weariness voice that is abnormally deep or harsh Hoarseness painful larynx (tightness or muscle aches in the throat) Voice breaks or fades suddenly voice range loss when singing frequently needing to clean one's throat experiencing speech loss
