CHEER DANCE
- According to the Cambridge Dictionary (n.d), the
simple definition of cheer dance is the activity of
leading the crowd in shouting encouragement and
supporting a team at a sports event.”
Furthermore, Cheerleading is an activity in which
the participants cheer for their team as a form of
encouragement. It is performed to motivate
athletic teams by chanting slogans, to entertain the
audience, and even for competitions like NCC
(National Cheerleading Championship), and so on.
According to Inquirer (2014), cheerleading was
originally meant to cheer basketball and other sports
teams as they competed; at the same time, it was
mainly a combination of dance and gymnastics. On
the other hand, the original function of the groups
cheering for the athletic team is to support and give
the players confidence to fight for their alma mater. It
also originated from American tradition - the pep
squads.
Cheerdance is rooted in the cheerleading performance of a routine usually dominated by
gymnastics skills such as jumps, tumbling skills, lifts, and tosses combined with shouting
or cheering for a certain team during a game or sport.
- It consists of Lifters, Flyers, and even Bands including Backspoter and Spoters.

CHEER DANCE

  • According to the Cambridge Dictionary (n.d), the simple definition of cheer dance is “ the activity of leading the crowd in shouting encouragement and supporting a team at a sports event .” Furthermore, Cheerleading is an activity in which the participants cheer for their team as a form of encouragement. It is performed to motivate athletic teams by chanting slogans, to entertain the audience, and even for competitions like NCC (National Cheerleading Championship), and so on. SIMPLE DEFINITION: ● CHEER

  • According to Oxford Languages (n.d), cheer is the “ shout for joy or in praise or encouragement, and to give comfort or support to. Cheerfulness, optimism, or confidence .”
  • According to Cambridge Dictionary (2024), cheer is “t o shout loudly in order to encourage someone in a competition ”. ● DANCE
  • According to Britannica (2024), “ dance is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself ”. ● GYMNASTICS
  • Gymnastics is a competitive sport in which individuals perform optional and prescribed acrobatic feats mostly on apparatus to demonstrate strength, balance, and body control. It is also a physical exercise designed to develop strength and coordination (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, n.d.). On top of that, based on Oxford Languages (n.d.), gymnastics are “ exercises developing or displaying agility and coordination ”. Moreover, according to Britannica (2023), gymnastics is // the performance of systematic exercises - often with the use of rings, bars, and other apparatus - either as a competitive sport or to improve strength, agility, coordination, and physical conditioning .//

The First Cheerleader Up until November 2, 1898 the cheers and chants broke out from the crowd itself spontaneously. Very likely, they weren’t always done in unison, and may have even had competing groups trying to start their own chants. It was that day that a University of Minnesota student, Johnny Campbell, got up from the seats and took the field in order to lead the student body in a chant: Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah! Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah! He jumped over the fence, and cheerleading as we know it was born. The “birthday of cheerleading” is celebrated annually on November 2nd. Cheerleading Grows Other students soon joined Johnny on the field, and as opposing fans saw the effectiveness of having a group fire up the crowd, “Yell Leaders” started sprouting up all across college campuses. As it grew, cheerleaders started adding many of the elements we know today, such as megaphones to be louder, arm motions for crowds to keep time, signs, poms, and even basic jumps, tumbling, and stunts (more commonly called “lifts” back in the day!) Cheerleading Becomes Female While women were permitted to be on cheerleading teams, yell leaders were predominantly male up until World War II. With “the men going off to war”, women filled the role on the sidelines. Once the war was over, cheerleading remained overwhelmingly a female activity. Today, females account for approximately 85% of participants.

MOVEMENTS

Tumbling ● Cartwheel

  • perform a circular sideways handspring or handsprings with the arms and legs extended.
  • a fast, skillful movement like a wheel turning, in which you throw yourself sideways onto one hand, then onto both hands with your legs and arms straight and your legs pointing up, before landing on your feet again. ● Roundoffs
  • it is similar to a cartwheel, except the gymnast lands with two feet placed together on the ground instead of one foot at a time, facing the direction they arrived from. This is achieved by twisting the hands and shoulders as the hands are placed on the ground. ● Back handsprings
  • a tumbling skill that involves jumping backward and passing through a handstand position before landing back on the feet. ● Back Tuck
  • back flip with legs in a tucked position. Jumps
  • Cheerleading jumps range from simple, quick jumps to more complex contortions. Jumps are used at sporting events as well as cheerleading competitions.
  • According to Krager (2013), “ Cheerleading jumps are a mix of grace, agility, and power, and they are critical for stirring up the crowd and adding that extra flair to a routine.

Cheerdance As an Art

  • Cheerdance does not just serve as entertainment, to motivate sports teams, entertain an audience, or even for competition; rather, it is an Art. Besides, it serves as one of the Performance Arts due to the expression of movements, energy, and creativity through the combination of dance, jumps, stunts, tumbling, and pyramids while following the rhythm of the music - known as rhythmic movements (moving in a structure of patterns in time).
