Task sheet : Paragraph Writing Model 604-102-MQ A To be studied for midterm writing exam Paragraph Types Before learning how to effectively structure a simple paragraph, it would behoove the writer to learn the three types of paragraphs that are known in academic circles. (SI)To begin, the most common paragraph type, known as the Body Paragraph , is part of a larger academic text. (EX)For example, it is part of an essay, also known as a composition or a term-paper. It is also part of a business letter or university entrance letter, or part of a cover letter that is attached to a curriculum vitae. Given that the paragraph is part of a larger text, we call it the Body Paragraph because it is part of the development of a larger premise or idea. (SI) The second type of paragraph is called the Short Answer( stand alone) paragraph which responds to a particular academic question. (EX)The answer to that question is elaborated and explained in a coherent and academic style within the paragraph. (SI)Last but not least, the third example is found in Summary Writing (EX)whereby a long and extensive original source of information is reduced to its essential and main points for communication or study purposes.(CS) In sum, while they all follow the same generic form, knowing which of these three types one would need to write would help the author formulate the paragraph effectively to communicate his or her message in that said paragraph. Word Count (WC) 227 Task : Underline the topic sentence and square off the main idea. Circle the controlling idea. Place SI over Supporting Idea. Place EX over examples.
