The temperature at which one phase of a solid solution is transformed to another form iscalled critical temperature. Different phases inthe above diagram have different properties.
Normalizing: to refine the structure after it hasbeen distorted by hammering or working whenin the cold state.
Annealing: to soften the metal
Quenching: to harden a metal
Tempering: to remove brittleness caused byhardening,
Hot Working of Steel: changing shape attemperature above critical point
Hand Forging and Forging Equipment:shaping carried out under hand cotrol
Forge: furnace
Hearth: to burn coke
Tuyere: pipes to force air into fire
Blower: for supplying air under pressure totuere
Chimney: to carry away smoke and gases
Bosh or Water Tank: to hold water forquenching
