This definition has influenced many city planners and designers to this day. Lynch's five-year study of how people view cities resulted in Image of the City. For his investigation, he used mental maps, which are basic sketches of maps drawn from memory of urban regions. In the first section, new concepts of legibility and imageability are introduced to create the theoretical groundwork for the entire book. Following that, Lynch used three American cities as examples to demonstrate his point. Field reconnaissance results were compared. The third section summarizes five elements and their interrelationships from earlier studies that serve as the core.
