Topic: Chemistry Graduates in the Food and Beverage Industry

Chemistry graduates in industrial chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering and other fields related to chemistry are closely related to the quality inspection process. This quality either leads to products, processes, resources, materials, facilities, and so on. Therefore, as a chemistry graduate, you are very familiar with the concept of quality. This Quality concept is generally divided into two, namely Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA).

a. Quality Control (QC) Quality checks that relate to the level of accuracy or sustainability between products and processes and predetermined standards. b. Quality Assurance (QA) Quality checks that relate to the level of satisfaction and expectation levels of consumers of products and services. A chemistry graduate in career development requires skills in the form of soft skills and balanced technical skills in order to be able to adjust to job responsibilities according to competence and the work environment.

a. Technical Skills These are skills related to scientific and practical competencies related to work responsibilities. For chemistry graduates, these technical skills include:

  • operation of laboratory equipment, workshop equipment, machine operation, instrument mastery,
  • data processing using statistical process control (SPC), minitab, SPSS, instruments, software on the results obtained,
  • knowledge and understanding of the handling of hazardous chemicals, storage of materials, handling of tools.

b. Soft Skills

  • Communication Communication between partners or coworkers, communication to superiors is very important to establish good working relationships.
  • Adapt quickly The ability to adapt to the work environment is needed everywhere because it is very influential in order to be able to adjust to carry out job duties and responsibilities.
  • Resistant to pressure Able to accept criticism and suggestions from both colleagues and superiors and make these criticisms and suggestions as motivation and introspection to develop better in the future.
  • Passion and high curiosity

With the industrial revolution in the future, it will greatly affect jobs, skills, and how people work. The skills needed in the future to face the industrial revolution include:

a. Functional skills

  • Math b. Soft skills
  • Creativity
  • Analytical skills and problem solving
  • Communication and networking skills
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Flexible and adaptive skills In addition to skills, attitudes are also needed in working in the industry including: a. Passion Interest and interest in a field of work that is undertaken so that it is always encouraged to learn and is always curious about the field. b. Attitude A good attitude needs to be applied both to daily habits and when working. The need to respect the work and people around the work environment. c. Creativity Creative, innovative, and initiative to provide solutions in work (opinions) at least contribute to the industry where they work. Initiative to work and be responsible for work without being told but still comply with procedural instructions and regulations at work. d. Uncomfort Uncomfort or reluctance, having a sense of shame and respect for the environment In which to work can be a plus point that a person is seen as being able to position himself in his environment. .

  1. Question: Is it necessary to familiarize using asinf language especially English in the work environment in a company? Answer : English is used as a unifying and connecting language between workers both from within the country and with other countries. Mastering English is not a loss because English is important in interacting and giving task instructions or orders that use international languages.

Answer: Regarding the nature of the boss, first understand the character of the boss whether the boss is a person with a character to the pont of work (results) or a person with a careful and observant character who considers the process and data obtained first.   3. Question: Can analytical chemistry graduates be placed in other departments outside the competencies mastered or related to other than chemistry in industry? Answer: Analytical chemistry can be placed in a division or division outside of chemistry competence only. Specific fields will not hinder and limit a person to take the initiative to learn and try to master other fields. If deemed capable of mastering other fields, this competency can be a plus point that a person has a sense of competitiveness and can adapt to existing challenges.

Question: What are the differences in the assignment of work responsibilities based on educational background and degrees such as bachelor degree, doctoral, magister, or Vocational or General High School graduates? Answer: The difference in the assignment of responsibilities depends on the needs of the worker for the position or position required in the industry. If the job duties or responsibilities are better performed by vocational or general high school graduates, these graduates will get the job position. The assignment of job responsibilities, apart from depending on the position required, also depends on the character, skill, and responsibility of each individual in doing the job. Educational background is not the main issue for getting a job position.
  5. Question : What is a good initiative? Answer: Good initiative is being able to perform job responsibilities without the need for constant prompting while still complying with procedural instructions and regulations in performing job duties.
  6. Question : With the future industrial revolution becoming more sophisticated, is analytical chemistry competency still needed?
