Section 1: OVERVIEW OF A WORLD WITHOUT LIES
When the TruthSpec was made necessary in 2067, everything changed forever. Designed to
detect lies with almost perfect precision, these thin smart lenses are worn like glasses. They
could quickly identify dishonest behavior by examining vocal tones, brainwave reactions, and
micro-expressions. For truth, the TruthSpec's eyes turn green. Red for lying.
TruthSpecs, initially developed for political discourse and police enforcement, have
permeated daily life. These days, they are necessary in homes, workplaces, schools, and even
hospitals. They are worn on dates by couples. They are worn in classrooms by teachers. At
meals, kids wear them.
People initially rejoiced. Politicians who were corrupt quit. The dishonest were exposed.
Overnight, fake news vanished. The world became truthful. Then, however, things started to
go apart.

Section 1: OVERVIEW OF A WORLD WITHOUT LIES

When the TruthSpec was made necessary in 2067, everything changed forever. Designed to detect lies with almost perfect precision, these thin smart lenses are worn like glasses. They could quickly identify dishonest behavior by examining vocal tones, brainwave reactions, and micro-expressions. For truth, the TruthSpec's eyes turn green. Red for lying. TruthSpecs, initially developed for political discourse and police enforcement, have permeated daily life. These days, they are necessary in homes, workplaces, schools, and even hospitals. They are worn on dates by couples. They are worn in classrooms by teachers. At meals, kids wear them. People initially rejoiced. Politicians who were corrupt quit. The dishonest were exposed. Overnight, fake news vanished. The world became truthful. Then, however, things started to go apart.

Couples split up because of "tiny" but honest opinions. "I no longer adore you." "You don't seem beautiful to me." "The only reason I'm here is because I'm afraid of being alone." When parents expressed their disappointment, children sobbed. When people revealed long-held grudges, friendships broke down. When anxious candidates admitted, "I don't actually know how to do this," job interviews fell apart. No one, not even to be nice, could lie. Others, however, assert that they are human. You recently learned that one of your best friends is a liar. They promise to provide you with a Veil lens. You were free to talk, even lie if necessary, for the first time in years. How would you respond? Would you keep them safe? Would you file a report about them? Would you accompany them?

Section 2: QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  1. Is it always wrong to lie? Can lying be polite or beneficial at times?
  2. If everyone spoke the truth, would society function more effectively?
  3. If everyone you knew could tell if you were lying, how would your life change?
  4. Is it beneficial to be totally honest in relationships? Why not?
  5. Should people be allowed to choose what they disclose, even if it involves lying?
  6. Even if it meant breaking the law, would you take advantage of the opportunity to speak freely once more?

Section 3: SELECT YOUR OWN JOURNEY

You recently discovered that your friend is a liar. You are offered a Veil contact lens. You may lie again if you wear it. Outcomes:
