PROBLEMATIZING THE DEPICTION OF THE SQUIRE IN MACAULAY’S THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND

INTRODUCTION

The History of England is a work of five volume

by Macaulay. It covers the 17 years period from

 In Chapter III of the First Volume to draw the

then state of England he criticizes the Country

Gentlemen.

 In order to arrive at an accurate historical

estimate, Macaulay's judgments must be

evaluated in the light of his personal whims and

Prejudices.

MEANING OF THE TERM “SQUIRE”

 (^) Initially, in the Middle Ages a squire was an attendant of a knight.  But the use of the term evolved over time. Later a village leader or a landlord or a lord of the manor might be called a s quire.  And still later, the term applied to key public figures, such as justices of the peace, or members of parliament.

ACTUAL HISTORY OF THE SQUIRE

 (^) The Squire played a significant role in the history of England.  (^) The period from the Norman Conquest to the accession of Henry VII was a growing stagnation in rural England and its unsettled political condition led to the formation of independent economic manor-states.  (^) And through the decay of old nobility and land improvement the country Squire becomes important during the reign of Queen Elizabeth.  (^) From the accession of Henry VII to the deposing of James II (1688), The Squires played the most significant role in the history of England. They served the country as the Justice of Peace.

 (^) From the "Glorious Revolution" to the Reform Bills of 1832 saw them more powerful than any other lay class of Europe. They furnished the majority of the members of the House of Commons; they served the throne in war as officers in the Army and Navy  (^) From 1689 to 1832 they were the real rulers of England.  (^) There are many other historians like G. M. Trevelyan, Lunt, and H. D. Traill who treat the squire in a favourable light.  (^) The Rev. 'Mr. Ditchfield is one of the opposite extreme. In his eyes, the squire was a paragon of virtue, courtesy, honour, and wisdom. He is a worshipper of the long ago and the squires he describes are ideal men seen in a sort of romantic view.

CONCLUSION

 Finally it can be said that though the squire too have had their follies as we all have but Mr. Macaulay’s writing is very much subjective in approach. He is a “systematic falsifier of history” (Marx).
