Tujuan K3: Berdasarkan UU No.1 Tahun 1970 tentang Keselamatan Kerja:
- Melindungi dan menjamin keselamatan setiap tenaga kerja dan orang lain di tempat kerja,
- Menjamin setiap sumber produksi dapat digunakan secara aman dan efisien,
- Meningkatkan kesejahteraan dan produktivitas nasional.

Berdasarkan penyebab kerugian yang dikemukakan oleh Det Norske Veritas (DNV, 1996), terlihat bahwa jenis kerugian akibat terjadinya kecelakaan kerja meliputi manusia/pekerja, properties, proses, lingkungan, dan kualitas.
