“Think of any problem that you have experienced in your life may it be in family, career or self. Explain how
you were able to overcome such problem using Polya’s Four-step Process of Problem Solving.”
Let’s consider a common self-problem: Procrastination. We’ll use Polya’s four steps of problem-solving:
Understanding the Problem
You have a pattern of putting off jobs until the very last minute, which frequently leads to increased stress and poor-
quality work. You want to break the pattern of putting things off till later.
Devising a Plan
The plan may include breaking down huge jobs into smaller, more manageable sections, setting out defined times for
work and breaks, and creating goals that are specific and attainable for each activity.
Carrying Out the Plan
Create a list of all of your tasks along with the due dates for each one. Deconstruct more involved tasks into their
component pieces. Establish concrete objectives for when you intend to finish each component of the project.
Maintain your work schedule as best you can and give yourself small breaks every so often to prevent burnout.
Looking Back
After a few weeks have passed, evaluate how far you've come. You seem to be putting things off a lot less, right? Do
you have the ability to accomplish your deadlines without experiencing any stress? If not, what kinds of challenges
are you encountering? Make adjustments to your plan and strategies based on what you've learned from this
reflection.
Keep in mind that overcoming procrastination requires both time and patience on your part. If you find yourself
occasionally failing, try not to be too hard on yourself about it. The most important thing is to keep trying different
things and getting better.
