The Basics
What is politics? What different types of politics exist? Where does politics happen? Do you agree with how the textbook defines politics? What is/are your politics? Why do we disagree with each other?
Why do we need government? Is government necessary? Desirable? Is anarchy better than government? Is large government good government?
The American Founding
Were the American colonies unreasonable about the tax issue? Is it healthy politically for us to question the government? What is the difference between a republic and a democracy? What makes a citizen? What duties do we have as citizens? Why has the Constitution lasted? What do you think of the Virginia Plan? The New Jersey Plan? Is the Constitution political scripture? What would have happened had the Constitution never been written? Should we go to direct democracy? Does the government respond too much to the whims of the people? Do we have majority tyranny now? Is it too hard to amend the Constitution? Is the Constitution too ambiguous? How do you change the Articles of Confederation without changing the Constitution? Will we ever see an assembly like that of the founders again?
Why did the founders create Article I as they did? Why did the founders create Article II as they did? Is the necessary and proper clause too dangerous? Too vague? Should the president just be the administrator of the government? When can a president use the dictatorial role legitimately? Should presidents take the lead in public affairs? Why? Should the Vice-President be put in charge of domestic affairs while the President remains in charge of foreign relations? Should presidents be the ones to first make up the budget? Should we have more than one president? Should we go to a parliamentary system where a prime minister is the head of the government? The Supreme Court
Which is better - activism or restraint? Is the Supreme Court too powerful? Do we need more or less members of the Supreme Court? Is the Supreme Court too passive? Should the Supreme Court follow original intent? Do not Supreme Court decisions in effect really act as amendments to the Constitution? Is the Supreme Court too insular from the people? Should members of the Supreme Court be directly elected? Should we have one member for each ethnicity and gender on the SC?
Campaigns and Elections
Does it cost too much to run for office? Should candidates take public funds for their campaigns? What is the best way to win a campaign? Have American political campaigns become too negative? How do we change our election process? Are the political parties too left out of the campaign process? Are open, closed, and blanket primaries a good way to select nominees? Are we having the election caucuses and primaries too early? Should we abolish the electoral college? Should we put the electors on the ballot? Should we just vote for electors and then have them choose president? Should the electors be tied to a particular candidate? Is it too expensive to run for office? How do we make it less expensive? What are the implications of media ownership by a few big corporations? Are there problems with the news being selected in terms of how well it might appeal to people? Why do so fed media outlets discuss/report on politics? (with the exception of election years) Is infotainment (mixing journalism with theater – Hard Copy) wrong to do? What impacts might infotainment have on politics? Is the FCC too powerful? Should we get rid of the FCC in order to allow more freedom to say what we want? Does the marketplace of ideas really exist? Should the media be gatekeeper? Do journalists live up to the standards of journalism? Is one minute coverage enough time to really let you know what is going on? Is horse race journalism good for American politics? Should the media set the political agenda? Does the mass media, especially television, reinforce the dominance of the existing culture and order? Are there any counter-examples that show it doesn’t? Is reporting biased?
Political Parties
Is the two-party system a workable system? Should we encourage the rise of viable third and fourth parties? Are political parties too divisive? Are political parties too broad to be effective? What political party do you belong to? Why? Why don’t people belong to political parties anymore?
How many have the same values as your peers? How many have had conflicts between one set of values and others? How did you resolve it? Is it even possible to accurately measure public opinion?
Participation
What is the best way to encourage citizens to participate? What is the best way to participate? How do we encourage citizens to vote? Should Americans be required to participate? Has anyone has participated in some way and how they felt doing so Has anyone tried to influence the government? Are there any militia members in the class? What benefits do citizens receive from voting? How much participation is necessary to make government better and responsive? Can citizens really govern indirectly through their representatives? How large is your efficacy now? Why are American citizens more likely to protect than citizens of other countries? How much is done secretly by the government? Should it do anything secretly? Do cities have responsibility to meet these needs on page 204? Is it okay to have only a few knowledgeable citizens influence government more than the rest of the citizens? Why do you vote? How do we encourage more voting in the United States? Should we? Should there be punishments or rewards for voting? Should voting be made compulsory? Do we need another round of progressivism?
