Knowing About the Philippine Traditional Sports and Games Traditional Sports and Games (TSG), recognised by UNESCO as world intangible heritage, are more than their title suggests. In the purest sense, they are the games and movements that are traditional to our cultures, from dances to ball games and water sports. A. The Philippine Traditional Games The traditional Filipino Games or Indigenous Games in the Philippines , called in Tagalog: Laro ng Lahi , are games commonly played by children, usually using native materials or instruments. In the Philippines, due to limited resources of toys for Filipino children, they usually invent games without the need of anything but the players themselves. Their games' complexity arises from their flexibility to think and act.

  • Laro ng Lahi was coined and popularized by the Samahang Makasining (commonly known "Makasining") with the help of National Commission for Culture and the Arts and being used by the other Philippine Local Government Unit, other organizations and other institution. Imparting of these Filipino games to the youth is one of the main objectives of the organization.
  • These Laro ng Lahi are usually played using the native materials or instruments. And due to limited resources of the toys, young Filipinos used their creativity of creating and inventing games without the need of anything but the players themselves and make the game more interesting and challenging.
  • Laro ng Lahi is a cultural treasure (yaman ng lahi) cherished by generations of Filipinos. It is a favorite past-time that is close to the hearts of Filipinos, encompassing generations from our grandparents, to our parents, and among the youth & toddlers of today.
  • Philippine traditional games mark in the hearts of the Filipino Children, back when electronic devices weren't common.
  • Considering that almost 60% of the mass population in the Philippines don't have computers and still can't afford the high-tech game gadgets, the Filipino Traditional Street Games are still a favorite past-time among children in heavy urban areas and provinces.
  • Laro is the Filipino generic term for all forms of recreational play. There is no specific term for competitive games. Filipinos say “Laro Tayo” means Let’s Play, which became one of the reasons why we have the term “Laron ng Lahi”.
  • Played in the streets of Philippine communities, they are commonly called street games.

Importance Of Philippine Traditional Games

It brings out the child among our parents when they mention it, and vividly remembering their childhood playmates and the neighborhood where they use to play it. It is every adult's wish for the new generation of Filipino to experience the fun of the Traditional Street Games Benefits of Traditional Filipino Games Children will always continue to enjoy games from the past, as long as they learn to play them. These games can also be of great benefit to them, they require physical activity, social skills, creativity, imagination, competition, camaraderie.
  • Traditional children's games stimulate their growth, physically as well as intellectually. They will also help them to make friends.
  • Traditional games give happiness to both mind as well as having good health, it also helps the children to maintain good emotional stability. And it keeps them fit and healthy.
  • Traditional games help the social, emotional stability, mental learning and physical abilities of Filipino children who play these games.
  • Family plays very important role in the transmission of traditional games, specifically parents reinforce the children’s learning process (Hill, 2009).
  • Larong Pinoy is all about giving kids fun in the communities where they live, at the same time, promote healthy outdoor activities through play.
  • Outcomes of TSG (Traditional Street Games) to children are combination of exercise for the body that makes children to be more flexible and physically healthy, cultural and social learning, positive social values and skill development.
  • TSG helps children to retain their playful attitude which contributes to open- mindedness, creativity, and flexibility, and problem solving (Calixihan, 2010).

4. The Skin: The pores of the skin open up during exercise. The result is a healthier skin, because of more efficient disposal of impurities and dirt. 5.Temperature of the Body: The temperature of the body rises during playing. This promotes the burning up of the toxic substances in the body. In short, all the systems of the body derive invaluable benefits from playing healthy games or exercise. Due to limited resources of toys of Filipino children, the youngs used their creativity of creating and inventing games without the need of anything but the players themselves and make the game more interesting and challenging. Because it is a tradition for Filipinos to play in a bigger and spacious area, most games are usually played outside the house. Some games are played or held during town fiestas in the provinces.

RACE GAMES- The objective is to first move at the command of START and arrive first at the end of the track. RHYTHM GAMES - The outcome is determined by players’ musical skills combined with skills, e.g. chanting, clapping hands or playing an instrument to provide the beat or cadence for performance. SIMULATION GAMES- The outcome is determined by players’ ability to copy either one another or some other person or thing. This type of game is an attempt to simulate the decisions and processes inherent to some real-world situation. Most of the mechanics are chosen to reflect what the real-world consequences would be of each player action and decision. There are three different types of simulation:

  1. Mimicry games, where players copy actions, sounds or appearance of people, objects or animals from their environment.
  2. Imitation games, where players copy the skill performance of others, usually in an effort to become skillful themselves.
  3. Dramatic play, where players act out situations and to try different ‘roles’. VERBAL GAMES- The outcome is determined by players’ ability to combine their memory with their use of words. Verbal games are considered especially important means for practicing oral skills in those societies where writing has yet to develop. Perceptive awareness, association and logic are components of cognitive skills. These skills are extremely important. However, verbal games combine memory and strategy skills.
