language in which we speak. Langua ge and culture are intricately
related and depend on each other. O ur language which we speak
has formed many cultural attitudes a nd values which we immerse
ourselves in. Many Australian texts ha ve strong distinctive features
which represent the masculinity wh ich is found in our nation.

masculinity can be shown through th e text The Australian Legend
by Russell Ward. In the text, males a re represented as practical,
rough and disaffectionate, this can al so be seen through the
constant use of the word he which s hows the male dominance in
the text thus supporting the strong m acho like characteristics of
Australian men.

says He is a fiercely independent person who hates officiousness
and authority. This attitude can displa y the value of freedom
which men like to have. The freedo m of being able to gamble,
drink, swear and have fun with your m ates without the authority
getting in the way is a true attribute to your typical Australian
man.

The text expresses that men need to show confidence in order to be identified as a true Australian man, when she says that you need the exact degree of matinees in order to associate with the country Aussie folk, this cultural attitude reflects a value of wanting to belong to the community. The representation of the character is an outsider who just

wants to fit in is also displayed in the text when even though

he has the elastic side boots anyone could see he was a city

bugger. This representation also supports the principle of

belonging in Australian men.

DEFINITION 8 Although the Indigenous people of Australia hold many different attitudes and values compared those of the standard Australian English, through selected texts it can be seen that masculinity is still a key aspect of the Indigenous males of Australia. In the text An Australian son, a representation of a dispossessed aboriginal boy who grows up in a rich white family is shown. TERM 9

The story was told through the perspective of a young boy

subjected to many taunts and racial slurs such as Koon due

to being different. Although after finding out he was in fact

Aboriginal he was in very proud to indulge in his culture, as

the idea engendered pride.

This shows the strength in which indigenous men hold, that

even though they are the victims to bullying from the typical

anglo - Saxon they show persistence and toughness through

the racial discrimination, this then allows them to value and

honour their culture more strongly.
