Pampanga

Revolt

The First Pampanga Revolt in 1585 was undertaken by native

Kapampangan leaders against Spanish encomienderos due to

abuses felt by the natives inflicted by the encomienderos. The

revolt included a plot to storm Intramuros.

Arcabuceros de Pampanga (Kapampangan harquebusiers) c. 1590s,

wearing ‘‘turung’ (conical hats) and ‘balútî’ (armour).

Managuete’s Surrender

  • the Maese de Campo sought Managuete's surrender, which occurred under the condition of receiving a pardon and the presence of a friar for assurance of safety.
  • Managuete and his followers surrendered, and he was taken prisoner. Defeat of Juan Manila Forces
  • Juan Manila, along with other Indios Principales, retreated to plan another attack.
  • The Maese de Campo tricked Juan Manila using travelers, leading to a confrontation where everyone was shot and killed. Rebellion in Pampanga (April):
  • A rebellion led by Principales Don Juan de Manila and Don Nicolas Managuete.
  • They gathered a force of about one hundred armed Indios with arquebuses and other weapons. Defeat of forces:
  • President sent the Maese de Campo with 30 soldiers to quell the rebellion
  • The well-armed rebel forces, equipped with over sixty arquebuses and armor, were ultimately defeated, resulting in the separation of leaders Don Juan de Manila and Don Nicolas Managuete.
