“Think of any problem that you have experienced in your life may it be in family, career or self. Explain how
you were able to overcome such problem using Polya’s Four-step Process of Problem Solving.”
Let’s consider a common career problem: Deciding whether to Accept a Job Offer. We’ll use Polya’s four steps of
problem-solving:
Understanding the Problem
A potential employer has extended a job offer to you, and you are considering accepting it. However, the position is
located in a different city, and it would be necessary for you to relocate in order to take it. You are undecided about
whether or not to take them up on their offer.
Devising a Plan
It's possible that the plan will involve analyzing the benefits and drawbacks of the job offer. This involves taking into
account aspects such as the salary, benefits, cost of living in the new city, opportunities for growth, and personal
aspects such as the distance from one's family and friends.
Carrying Out the Plan
You might begin by learning more about the company and the city where it is located. Talk to some of the current or
former workers, if at all possible. Determine how much it will cost you to maintain your current standard of living in the
new city and do the math to compare it. Think about your long-term career goals, and evaluate whether or not this job
will help you achieve those goals.
Looking Back
Consider your options carefully after you've made a choice. Are you content with the decision you made? Have you
taken into account everything? If you decided to accept the offer, how do you feel about the new job and the city
where it's located? If that wasn't the case, what steps could you have taken differently? You will be able to improve
the decisions you make in the future thanks to this reflection.
