Prayer
Speech Styles is the form of language that the speaker uses which characterized by the degree of formality. There are several Speech Styles as follows:
1. Intimate Style Used between two people who have very close relationships Grammar is unnecessary Certain terms of endearment, slangs or expressions Examples : husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, mother and daughter 2. Casual Style Language is used between friends Often very relaxed and just focused on getting the information out Used in informal situations and uses informal language Slang, vulgarities and colloquialism are normal Examples: friends, two acquaintances, blogs, letters to friends 3. Consultative Style A professional discourse Happens in two-way participation Speaker does not plan what he wants to say The response of the speaker depends on the feedback of the listener Examples: communication between a superior and a subordinate, doctor and patient, lawyer and client, lawyer and judge, teacher and student, counselor and client. 4. Formal Style Language is used in formal setting Usually one-way in nature Usually follows a commonly accepted format Slang terminologies are avoided Examples: guest speaker and graduating class, sermons, rhetorical statements and questions, speeches, pronouncements made by judges, announcements, teacher’s Discussion 5. Frozen Style Used generally in a very formal situation Most formal communicative style for respectful situations Does not require any feedback from the audience Usually uses long sentences with correct grammar and vocabulary The use of language is fixed and relatively static Example: the Lord’s Prayer, the Preamble of the Constitution, the Alma Mater, a bibliographic reference, laws, poem reader and listeners, stage actors and audience D. LEARNING ACTIVITIES Activity 1: Individual Activity Think of significant conversations you already had in the past. Identify the speech style you used during those conversations. Share it with the class.
