CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study The K-12 is a program that includes the kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (6 years of primary education, 4 years of JHS, and 2 years of SHS) to provide the students with sufficient knowledge and prepare them for higher education upon entering college. The General Academic Strand is one of the four strands of the Academic Track in Senior High School. It is a strand that takes a generalist approach in preparing students for college life. Unlike the other fields, GAS is designed for those students who have not yet decided which career path they want to take. This Strand offers various disciplines like Humanities, Social Sciences, Organization, and Management. The General Academic Strand allows students to select the appropriate immersion experience that will fit them. Because of the open electives, students can find their career by trying to enroll in a mixed strand subjects. Students can use the General Academic Strand to assist them make informed career decision. According to this statement, students in the General Academic Strand can find their career path because the GAS strand offers various subjects like the other strands have. As a result, students who enrolled in this strand will be able to find their career path by choosing this strand (Learning Links Academy, 2019). Biliran (2018) expresses that the General Academic Strand is frequently the go-to strand for those students who are keeping their college choices open. GAS is flexible enough that it shows you the subjects from other strands that you can learn from. The advantage of being a GAS student is that you can expand your knowledge by exploring new things that the other strands cannot. And from the word General it is belonging to a group and when it is used in fields of education, it means it just like any important field. First, we get the general and the basics of other strands which make students at least ready for higher education. Drece (2016) states that, the students can pursue any courses in college and choose the path they wish to take from there if they have not yet decided on a field when enrolling in Senior High School. In this statement, choosing the GAS strand is a flexible

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents the related literature and studies, the theoretical framework, and the definition of terms. Related Literature Lumboy (2019) stated that the Philippine Education System administers the K- curriculum, aiming to prepare students for college and the workforce. The extra two years of basic education, emphasized by the CHED Memorandum Order No. 105, allow students to enroll in any preferred college course, demonstrating the importance of multiple preparation tracks. Furthermore, as per Kaneez and Medha (2018) findings about the Factors influencing the career choices of grade 10 students in Mauritius, there was evidence of influences from parents on a child’s profession decision. Most pupils thought about their academic achievement and seeking suggestions for informed decisions. Informatics (2020) stated that in contrast to other K-12 tracks that are specific to a profession, GAS allows you to consider your possibilities. A Senior High School Strand called GAS prepares students for college by using a generalist approach. It offers a wide range of subjects including Management, Social sciences, Organization, and Humanities. GAS does not focus on any strand. Students are free to select any college degree program under the three strands, depending on the elective you select. Additionally, the possible course to pursue in this strand is Education. Furthermore, a supported research study by AMA University Online Education (2020), the GAS curriculum offers a varied range of courses to students, providing a foundation for liberal education and intellectual and physical development. The study conducted at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (2018) examined the impact of selecting General Academic Strand on students who are uncertain about their career choices. It highlighted the consequences of decisions and the strain students experience when making future plans. College courses can shape a student’s life trajectory and serve as a stepping stone to their ideal position. Senior high school students may find their strands unsuitable due to a shift in perspective or learning new skills over two years.

study is important because it offers fresh insights on dedication and involvement in planning and execution, which will benefit educators, instructional material makers, and policy makers. According to the researcher, education is an ongoing process of development. Related Studies The General Academic Strand (GAS) is designed for students who prefer a diverse selection of courses. The strand aims to provide the students with a framework of liberal education equipping them with knowledge and skills to facilitate intellectual and physical growth, to pursue their studies in college or university and contribute to the improvement of the community in which they live. The GAS curriculum includes specialization in Arts, Humanities, Business, Sciences, and Management. Cruz (2014) analyzed the K-12 curriculum, focusing on the General Academic Strand (GAS) tailored for undecided students. GAS covers various subjects, providing a strong educational foundation, although specialization may pose challenges. Cruz suggests GAS prevents costly major changes in college, making it beneficial for indecisive students. Therefore, careful consideration is vital in choosing a college path, and GAS offers valuable opportunities for exploring interests and passions. Moreover, as outlined by Biliran (2018), the General Academic Strand is deemed as the most suitable option for students who have yet to decide on their college paths. Additionally, the General Academic Strand (GAS) serves as a channel for students who are uncertain about their academic direction, offering them ample opportunities to explore various courses. This study contributes to the existing literature on the advantages of taking General Academic Strand, which were previously lacking. The study’s recommendation can be useful to teachers and students who are undecided. In Summary, Cruz and Biliran’s research offers insightful information about the advantages of taking General Academic Strand for those students who are still undecided Theoretical Framework Gottfredson's idea states that a person's career goals are a reflection of their self- concept. Individuals look for jobs that (a) fit with how they see themselves and (b) demonstrate their understanding of various professions. This idea explains why students are drawn to particular areas of concentration. This idea suggests that the secret to specialization selection is self-concept. Students typically select careers based on how well they fit their personalities. The hypothesis states that a person's social class, IQ, and prior experiences with sex type are the main factors. According to Siguan Jr.'s (1994)

study, which Sonsona (2012) mentioned, students' choice of specialization was also found to be significantly influenced by their self-concept. Another is Holland's theory of career choice, which contends that individuals can grow and thrive most effectively—as well as find employment satisfaction—in workplaces that complement their personalities. Individuals frequently select careers that are a good fit for their personalities. According to Holland (1994), the closer The more a personality and a work fit, the more satisfied one is. According to Abernathy (2003), Holland's approach emphasizes the precision of self-knowledge and career information required for career decision-making (Zunker, 1994, p. 49). This research will be carried out at Zamboanga City’s ICAS senior high school. The researchers intended to engage five (5) participants for this study. Only Grade 12 GAS students who have had the experience of being GAS students in senior high school. The other students who have different strands will be excluded from this study. Sampling Method This study will adopt a purposive sampling method. According to Vijayamohan, using the purposive sampling method, samples are chosen from the total sample size depending on the information gathered in accordance with the requirements of the test, survey, or study that the samples will be used for. By applying this technique, the researchers can guarantee that the sample is representative of the target group and offers deep insights into the various viewpoints and experiences within the General Academic Strand. The researchers will choose participants for this study based on certain standards relevant to the research issue, which focuses mostly on the benefits of the General Academic Strand in preparation for college. To apply this method to studying the advantages of the General Academic Strand in preparation for college, the selection of participants will be based on these criteria, wherein the researcher will select five participants who have the experience of being a GAS student. Research Instrument The research instrument that will be utilized in this study is a focus interview. According to Merton and Kendall, the purpose of the focus interview is to find out how people emphasizes the respondents’ personal and subjective responses, which the interviewer engages in order to obtain more details. In this investigation of the advantages of taking the General Academic Strand at Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School (ICAS) Tetuan, to obtain comprehensive data regarding this, the researcher will employ a focus interview about the GAS strand were the students are undecided to choose from. Using a focus interview in this study, the researcher will select five participants of G12 GAS students who meet the requirements determined by the purposive sampling method. Next, the researcher will ask each of the participants specific questions about the advantages of taking General Academic Strand in Senior High and also asking for follow-up queries to clarify and elaborate on the answers.

Focus interviews are helpful for gathering qualitative information and producing comprehensive and thorough accounts of the experiences of individuals. This enables the researcher to investigate the experiences of the participants within the general academic strand.
