Organizational Behavior and Human Performance, 4, 142-175. ERG theory, developed by Clayton Alderfer, is a modification of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Instead of the five needs that are hi- erarchically organized, Alderfer proposed that basic human needs may be grouped un- der three categories, namely, existence, re- latedness, and growth. Existence corre- sponds to Maslow’s physiological and safety needs, relatedness corresponds to social needs, and growth refers to Maslow’s es- teem and self-actualization.
