PARAPHRASING

Exercise 2 Read the following description of the bar chart given underneath, then cover the description and try to fill the gaps in the version below. Nine of the ten top rice-producing countries in the world in 1999 were in Asia. As one would expect, China was the greatest producer of rice, with nearly 193 million tonnes. It was followed by India, which produced over 122 million tonnes, while the third largest producer, Indonesia, was responsible for about one third of that amount, at just over 46 million tonnes. Bangladesh, Viet Nam and Thailand had similar levels of production, i.e. between 20 and 30 million tonnes each, while Malaysia, Japan and the Philippines ranged between 16 and 10 million tonnes. The only non-Asian producer on the list, the USA, accounted for just over 8 million tonnes. Nine of the ten top rice-producing countries in the world in 1999 were in Asia. As one would expect, China was __________________________________________________ of rice, with ______________________________________

Task Response

The table shows that there were significant changes in how internet users spent their time online in two years, 2007 and 2009. The most significant change was (1)________________________________________________. The use of (2)___________________________________________________________ from fourteen per cent to twenty- four per cent. However, this appears to be (3)___________________________________________ other forms of online communication, namely, (4)_____________________________________________, which both (5)________________________________ to only nine per cent and six per cent respectively of total activity. Another noticeable trend was (6)________________________________________ entertainment-related activities, such as (7)__________________________________________________, with each climbing one percentage point. Other activities, which can be seen as more practical, such as (8)______________________________________, (9)________________________________________________, and (10)________________________________________ (11)______________________________________ at a relatively low four, three, and two per cent respectively. Overall, in 2009 (12)____________________________________________________________ online interacting with others (nearly forty per cent in total); however, their preferred way of doing so had changed.

Focus on Coherence

Comparing Data

Exercise 5

How would you organize and categorize the main features of the Task 1 graph below? Writing Task 1 You should spend twenty minutes on this task. The graph provided shows data on the rates of people who had access to clean water in certain parts of the world in 2004. Summarize the given information by reporting the main features and making comparisons where Outline of Data There are 4 sets of data provided:

  1. 90% of people had access to clean water in Latin America.
  2. 86% of people had access to clean water in the Middle East
  3. 85% of people had access to clean water in South Asia.
  4. 56% of people had access to clean water in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Exercise 6

Now write a body paragraph that contains all the above data, but make sure that it accurately compares and contrasts the data in the graph above without being repetitive. Body Paragraph

Focus on Lexis

Using Appropriate Adjectives and Adverbs There was a sudden drop in profits. There was a gradua l drop in profits. French women generally used fewer hotel towels than Italian women. Women from France did not use as many towels in the hotel as women from ltaly.

Exercise 7

Look at the two following sentences and consider how adjectives and other modifying words affect the accuracy of the data being described.

  1. Despite a drop in the rate of teenagers having access to sports centers in 2004, from then on there was a rise in sports classes being offered to the point that in 2010, there was an increase in students involved in a sport.
  2. Despite a slight drop in the rate of teenagers having access to sports centers in 2004, from then on there was a significant rise in sports classes being offered to the point that in 2010, there was a fourfold increase in students involved in at least one sport.

Exercise 8

The following response is actually missing a number of adjectives and adverbs (see below). This time there are no blanks and you need to use your knowledge of the writing process to figure out where exactly they belong. To make things less confusing, they appear in the text in the same order as given below. unspecified different youngest respectively even relatively further middle significantly a lot Writing Task 1 You should spend twenty minutes on this task. The bar chart shows the age distribution of an unnamed town. Summarize the given information by reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant. Task Response This bar graph illustrates the age distribution in a town, while also comparing the numbers of men and women in age categories. Starting off with the age group, 0-18, there were 31 boys as compared to 25 girls, while there were 32 and 35 men and women in the 19-34 age grouping. Remarkably, the population of the next two age groupings, 35- and 50-64, was very high for men at 86 and 75 respectively, although the count for women was higher at 92 and 89 for each category. However, there were fewer people aged between 65 and 79 with only 38 men and 45 women, and then in the 80 plus age group the number dwindles even down to reach a low of 11 men and 19 women. In brief, it is clear from the data that most of the people living in this community are aged, and perhaps even more, there seems to be more women than men.
