Melek Sedef Şahinkaya 19143025 AET-124 Textual Analysis April 17, 2020 HOPE FOR FUTURE “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. (born January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) is one of the most unforgettable speeches of all time, in 1963-Washington. He is an American civil rights activist, the speech for civil and economic rights and end to racism in the United States. This speech was one of the main reasons for the breaking of the color barrier. King is a defender of non-violence.. Firstly, “Five score years ago,” the opening sentence of King's speech, is an allusion to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Luther King uses a lot of metaphorical words in his speech... ''It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.'' - ''light in the darkness'', ''Five score years ago'' - ''1000 years'', ''their captivity''- ''slave'', ''by the manacles of segregation'' - ''handcuffs'' and ''keep separate'' (white and black people)', ''prosperity'' - ''money and wealth''. Using figurative language is an effective way of communicating an idea that is not easily understood... King needed to make a connection with the people with the purpose of getting his message across. All along the use of repeating specific phrases, “Now is the time, I have a dream, Let freedom ring,” his use of allusions, and the way he uses metaphors, really make this speech so individual. By iteration the phrases, people throughout America see how passionate King is, and he gets his point across. Secondly , King's purpose is to help people see what's wrong and African-American people get everything, every right should be theirs... King claims America gives fake bank cheque, as liar and banking because African-American people still can't vote altough they promised it. The most commonly used repetition is freedom, which is used twenty times in his speech. This makes sense, since freedom is one of the most important themes of the speech. The other repetitions are we (30 times) (African people), our (17 times), (4 times), justice (8 times) injustice (3 times), you ( times), nation (10 times), america (5 times), american , and dream (11 times)
Consequentially, this is an remarkable speech made at a very vital time... By referencing these groups and making repetitive notations from their trials to those of the present situation makes this a marvelous speech. It is not only motivated and aimed audience but became, in itself, the next story that future descendants could refer to in times of trial. All of this combined with his strong voices and matchless delivery style leaves listeners aching to make a change, even years after his voice ring out across the reflecting pool at the Lincoln memorial... Martin Luther King’s Speech remains significant in the modern society. It comprise of well founded goals which if well addressed will take many countries up the ladder. However, critics will forever be there to search for the wrongs.
