Volumetric Flow Rate Measurement: A Laboratory Activity for Hydraulics 1 - Prof. Mante, Slides of Hydraulics

This laboratory activity guide focuses on measuring the volumetric flow rate of water using a hydraulic bench. It provides a detailed procedure for operating the bench, determining flow rate, and analyzing results. A clear description of the hydraulic bench's components and their functions, making it a valuable resource for students studying hydraulics and fluid mechanics.

I. Student Outcomes (SOs) Addressed by the Activity SO d, Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze, and interpret data, and synthesize information to provide valid conclusions for investigating complex problems. SO i, Function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multidisciplinary setting. II. Activity’s Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): At the end of this activity the students shall be able to: a. Measure the volume flow rate of water supplied by the Hydraulic Bench. b. Familiarize, identify and operate the fundamental parts of the Hydraulic Bench. III. Objective/s of the Activity The activity aims to determine the volume flow rate of water using the Hydraulic Bench. IV. Principle of the Activity The standard Hydraulic Bench is used for all the laboratory experiments carried out during this course. The bench has a closed water circulating system to facilitate mobility. Water is stored in an enclosed tank at the bottom of the bench then pumped up to the experimental setup situated on top of the bench from which water flows into the upper tank. The upper tank has a drain controlled by a plug to collect and gauge the water in the upper tank after which water is drained to the bottom tank. The volume of water collected in the upper tank (in liters) can be measured using the graduated scale fixed at the side of the Hydraulic Bench. The switch of the water pump and the control valve that regulates the amount of water that flows to the experimental setup are at the front side of the Hydraulic Bench. Hydraulic Bench is a very useful apparatus in hydraulics and fluid mechanics. It is involved in majority of experiments to be conducted. Discharge flow rate of water can be measured experimentally. Provides continuous flow of water. Various apparatus can be placed over it.

  1. Drain Valve – It is used for emptying sump tank.
  2. Side Channels – They are the upper sides of the channel. They are used to attach accessories on test.
  3. Volumetric Tank – It stores water coming from channel. This tank is stepped to accommodate low or high flow rates. It has a capacity of 60 liters.
  4. Stilling Baffle – It decrease turbulence of water coming from channel. It is located in the volumetric tank.
  5. Scale and Tapping – A sight tube and scale is connected to a tapping in the base of the volumetric tank and gives an instantaneous indication of water level.
  6. Dump Valve – It is used in emptying volumetric tank. It is located in the bottom of the volumetric tank.
  7. Actuator – Dump valve is operated by a remote actuator, lifting actuator opens the dump valve, when it is given a turn 90° it will turn the actuator in the open position.
  8. Overflow – It is an opening in the upper portion of the volumetric tank. It sends the water level above 46 liters to the sump.
  9. Measuring Cylinder – A measuring cylinder is provided for measuring of very small flow rate. The cylinder is stored in the compartment housing of the pump.
  10. Starter – It on/off the Hydraulic Bench V. Resources/Instruments Required:
  • Hydraulic Bench
  • Stopwatch VI. Procedure: Operating the Hydraulic Bench:
  1. Set up the Hydraulic Bench on an even surface.
  2. Fill the sump tank with water until the water level is 10 cm below edge of sump tank.
  1. Connect the apparatus to an electric power supply.
  2. Screw the discharge cap of a hose at the end of the discharge pipe
  3. Turn on the main power switch and turn on pump.
  4. Open flow adjustment valve carefully. Volumetric Flow Rate Determination:
  5. To do so, use stopwatch to establish time t required for raising the level in the volumetric tank of the Hydraulic Bench from 20 L to 30 L.
  6. Close the outlet valve.
  7. Read the actual volume at the remote sight gauge. Q =
