Ferdinand Magellan’s Voyage to the Philippines Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition have led him into the discovery of the Philippines where a series of events happened and lead Magellan into his fate. This paper analyzes three events that played a significant role in the history of Filipinos, namely: the location and date of the first Mass, the Mass that was held in Cebu where a beautiful wooden child Jesus was introduced by Pigafetta and Ferdinand Magellan’s fate at Mactan Island in April 1521. Ferdinand Magellan is widely regarded as having been an outstanding seaman and navigator. His seamanship in sailing from Spain to the Philippines was remarkable. His voyage over vast distances through some of the stormiest seas on earth and across the world’s largest ocean was an epic feat of exploration. The Location and Date of the first Mass The first mass was held on Mazaua (Limasawa) in March 1521 though there’s have been argument between the Limasawa versus Butuan camps but it is irrefutably decided in favor of “Limasawa”. The mass was attended by Magellan, Rajah Colambu, Rajah Siagu, Spanish voyagers, and the local islanders. In my perspective, this event really had a very big impact on us Filipinos because this event was the reason why we Filipinos became Christians and this occurrence is the First Holy Mass that marked the birth of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines. The Mass that was held in Cebu where a beautiful wooden child Jesus was introduced by Pigafetta The mass that was held in Cebu is the second mass dated April 1521 in participant of Rajah Humabon and his people. A total of 800 people were baptized by that time. Moreover, Pigafetta showed the queen an image of our Lady, a beautiful wooden child Jesus and a cross and the queen asked for the little child to keep in place of her idols and this image of child Jesus is now known as the St. Nińo found in Cebu. Ferdinand Magellan’s fate at Mactan Island in April 1521 Magellan offended Cilapulapu because Rajah Humabon was entitled as the “Christian King” after the christening and Cilapulapu have considered himself as the local ruler and not Rajah Humabon. Because of that Cilapulapu
did pay homage to the Christian King. Furthermore, Magellan received a request for help from Zula, a subordinate of Cilapulapu of Mactan Island. He said, that Cilapulapu was preventing him from paying tribute to Humabon and requested Magellan to send him a boat and some men to fight against Cilapulapu. It is not known if this was a ruse to induce Magellan to lose a boat and some men in an ambush, or Zula’s request was genuine, but Magellan decided to send not one but three long boats and a force of sixty men including himself to attack Cilapulapu. In addition, he decided that he would do this without the consent of Rajah Humabon and apparently without Zula’s help, too. The decision was greeted by a lot of opposition. At midnight, sixty of Magellan’s men set out armed with corselets and helmets. The local islanders had lances of bamboo and stakes hardened with fire. Cilapulapu’s warrior considerably outnumbered Magellan’s small force. Magellan was shot through the right leg with a poisoned arrow, knocked his helmet off his twice and an Indian hurled a bamboo spear in the captain’s face, but the latter immediately killed him with his lance, which he left in the Indian’s body. Eight of Magellan’s men were killed, 4 Indians were killed by mortars. Of Cilapulapu’s men, only 15 were killed. Elaborated the lifestyle back then and it described what the local islanders, what they ate, how they communicated, and how they lived it gives us Filipinos what we are and what we were back then. Pigafetta’s journal is the only known document about Cilapulapu’s life because in the past we Filipinos don’t know how to record events in that time. Pigafetta’s journal it considered the best source today of the customs and usages of the Filipinos in the early 16th^ century due to the daily notes Pigafetta took and details about the expedition he wrote. In addition, Pigafetta’s journal contains the first vocabulary of Visayan words ever penned by a European and those Visayan words are still present and usable as of now. Pigafetta’s journal about Magellan’s voyage around the world really played a crucial role in the Filipino history. References Field, R. (2006). Revisiting Magellan’s Voyage to the Philippines.
