ASSIGNMENT ON ENVIRONMENT ANALYSIS
According to Dubin and Olshtain (1986), wider aspects of the situation for
environment analysis that can be involved in language curriculum design consist of patterns
of language use in society, the language setting, group and individual attitude, and the
political and national context. In addition, these aspects were also related to the current
condition in Indonesia.
Indonesia has a national language and uses the national language for communicating
with fellows. The existence of Indonesian is sometimes rarely used by some regions, because
each region in Indonesia has its own regional language. It is because many tribes have their
own language, and make Indonesian not spoken in all regions. Some people use Indonesian
only in certain situations, such as formal matters, studying in class, etc.
Related to the aspect of patterns of language use in society, Indonesian society uses
Bahasa as their official language, it means that the society uses Bahasa as their language for
daily communication. Moreover, the use of English is rare so that the students can only
practice their English in the classroom or school. Finally, it leads to their lack of English
proficiency. Additionally, few of native English speakers in Indonesia also make the students
not get much English exposure from native English speakers and practice their English with
native English speakers as stated by Dubin and Olshtain (1986) as the language setting
aspects.
From the political and national context regarding language in Indonesia, this is
influenced by the arrival of traders from the Malay race who trade in the island of Sumatra.
This language is widespread in the territory of Indonesia because of its easy and simple
language. Malay language is one of the references for the birth of Indonesian.
Furthermore, about the group and individual attitude in Indonesia based on Dubin and
Olshtain (1986) which stated that ‘’majority-language speakers doubt the target language has
the contemporary relevance’’ then let’s have a look back when colonialism era, English is the
most least used language if its compared to deutch, spanish, and portuguese. It can be
assumed if the statement above was right, most Indonesians are always asking with their
sceptical and pessimistic mindset about what’s the correlation and benefits of using this
targeted language.
