how's the college? You will be very new to college as well. How's the college? settled in the new place.. And to know how she feels about the place. A4 The college….it is okay… Like, as we have many works to do. So I and the college rules and regulations are pretty difficult..Like what? Pretty tough to follow. The client is explaining about the college environment. And she has neutral feelings towards college. She mentions about the rules and took a while to frame the sentence. T5 So yeah. Okay. So do you mind telling me, why are you here today? Her Reason for coming for the session. A5 Okay, so for two, three days, I feel like I don't want to come to college. Like, when I wake up in the morning, I feel like Oh, my God, I think I think that whether I should go or not, but yeah. Anyway, I have to come here. She didn’t maintain eyecontact and took a sigh while answering the question. She has negative feelings towards attending college. But then ends up saying she is forced to do it. T5 So do you feel that you feel that past Two, three days, right? So before that, how would you feel about coming to college? Since she mentioned in the previous comments that she has been feeling it for the past 2 days wanted to know how she felt before that. Wanted to be assured on how she feels attending college as a whole. A5 Before that it was okay. But not like, really, I like this. I don't like this anymore. So I don't want to come to this place, Alright. So, since She has been feeling it for a while, she wasn’t maintaining
two, three days, it has increased a lot. Like when I wake up or you know, it really don't…….want to come to college. eye contact. She had intertwined her hands while speaking all the while. And she took a while to answer this…. And stammered while forming her sentences. T5 And yeah, okay. So you're trying to tell that it has been there, that you don't want to come to college. But since the past two, three days, it is very severe, you feel it very strongly. Although it has been there, it hasn't affected you too much. Or you know, it hasn't affected you so strongly. But now you feel that you have to, you know, you feel like it is very strong that you don't want to come to college. Reframing and Rephrasing the sentences to be sure about what she is feeling. A5 Yessssssss Her response had strong voice, and she was assertive while saying this. Head nod was there. T6 Okay, so why do you think you feel that? Is it something in college that makes you feel bad? Since she told that she doesn’t want to come wanted to enquire the reason behind it and why she feels that way. A6 I don't know. But yeah, like, I have had enough attendance. So I just thought of taking off…take leave. So when I wake up, I will think that whether I should go today. Anyway, I'm having attendance…..enough She took a few seconds before responding and a sigh, and stammered while she was answering. She told that since she has full attendance she
they're like, if they're forcing us to do everything they're forcing…. The place, which I lived in is different from the place now I'm living so that makes a difference. Yeah, there's a big difference. So no, during initial days, I have a problem adjusting within college. But later on I just really like it changed. Not completely but yeah, somewhat changed, but know… She also connects to her past experiences she has had from her colleges and she mentions how she isn't able to adjust. But she also acknowledges the differences. She has difficulty accepting it. T7 Okay. Yeah. So you told me that your previous place wasn't as strict as this. So how was your previous college or your environment back in your UG College? Would you mind telling me about that? Raising the question to see how she feels about the transition and even she can get an insight while comparing both. A7 Yeah, of course She was very happy to speak about it. A7 I pursued my UG in Kerala, like, no, they didn't impose so much work on us. Like, yeah, I know that it was UG AND Not that much to study, even though it's UG…. But like, they know, we had so much fun in class. So much fun in the hostel…., and like, the teachers were so good. Our interaction with the teacher is more than here, more than in this college. We had a lot of communication with the teacher. They're always there to help us. I'm not saying that here. The teachers are not there, but they're also having. I feel like She is explaining about the environment in her previous college and how she feels about it. She was very enthusiastic about explaining it. She used hand movements and smiled slightly while explaining about her previous institutions.
more comfortable in my previous place A7 Yeah, I know that. It will be there during the initial days. But though, like, I feel I'm not adjusted to this…..especially to this class. Okay. She acknowledges that transition will be difficult but she has difficulty accepting it. T8 So A, I know it is difficult to handle the transition…. But, have you ever tried to approach any of your teachers telling this? Like, have you ever approached your teachers asking about what you want to do or you know, asking about the subject, or have they helped you in any ways? Enquiring if the client has taken any actions to actually deal with it. And if it has helped her. A8 No, I haven't approached any one of them. She says it with a straight face. She responded quickly… T8 Okay. Have you ever felt like approaching them? Asking if she ever wanted to approach. A8 No. Not really… She answered after a few seconds T9 Yeah. Okay. And what about your friends there? You told me that you had very close friends back and you're UG back home. So how are you friends? Have you adjusted? Well, have you? Knowing her social circle in her college and comparing it to the previous friendship circle. Asking if there are any other things that contribute to her not wanting to come to college. A9 Well, no, I didn't have any problems with my She has a pleasant response. She
T9 Okay. So since you told me a lot of things that you had to do with the adjustment to the new environment, let's focus on one thing. Okay. So you told me that you know, you love you like the subject the psychology…. So what is the things that made you like psychology? Since she mentioned a lot of this, like friends, teachers and academics. I though to use the focusing skills and to focus on here and now… because she was concerned about it the most. A9 Yeah, since my 12th std I have studied the subject of psychology. And I don't know what made me like that. But yeah. The, like, to learn about others' behavior, others' minds. Yeah, like that. And so since my 12th grade,, I love taking psychology as a career, and I took my ug in psychology, based psychology and yeah. I feel now it is different She started explaining on how she was introduced and what made her like the subject. She had a pleasant expression while explaining about this. T 9 How do you think, it is different…..? To get an insight by comparing of how it is different A8 I think the way of teaching…….. is difficult in the transition. She was recollecting thoughts and responded and gave a pause before saying it is difficult. T10 That subject. So how was your teaching there? Back in the UG college? Where the teachers were good with the teaching , you know, where were they teaching better than what they're doing in the present College? Asking her how it is different. A10 Nooo… noo….They didn't teach really well, because She didn’t think too much, she was aware it was because of
social environment and the pressure….So the problem is not the teaching… A10 no, they didn't teach really well. But I think that teaching is not good there. Like, we enjoyed it a lot, okay. Explaining what she likes about the previous college and what she missed in the new place A10 We don't have any much pressure on us or studies. What makes this place different from the present one. T11 And so in the new college or the new environment, so you feel there is a kind of pressure within you. And because of that, there is something which stops you from having fun, which stops you from you know, being your fullest. Is that something you're trying to portray? Rephrasing to understand what she says… A11 Yeah, of course…. She was spontaneous and didn’t think much before answering T11 So, and what about the teachers here in the present College? Do you like them? How do they teach? Understanding what the real problem is focusing on different aspects of her academic life A11 They teach really well, like all are good….they that does really well. And I don't have any problem with teaching or anything, but ……..it's like, it depends on me like, they give many works, but I don't feel like no, with lots of works. I don't feel to do She stammered while answering she had problems putting her thoughts to words.
daily? Or is it like you study before exams? Is it Something like that? what type of learner she is. A13 Yeah. Although it was supposed to be a brief answer she only responded yes…. And then she responded A13 I only study during the exam days, and I’m that kind of person, you know, like, I don't sit and study in all days, only during the exams. She had a weak smile and said this… she was looking down on the bench. T14 Okay. So have you ever thought to yourself on why you like psychology? Before choosing counseling why did you like to choose psychology or for that counseling psychology….Or, you know, you told me that no, ug wanted to do psychology? What is it that you know, that made you feel like you want to do it? Asking her whether why she choose to study the subject and what made her think she is good at it. Asking what she observed in herself that she choose it. A14 Because I love to…….The first one is that I love to learn other's behaviour. Others are like other people. And so along with that, I just want to it's like a profession that helps others, right? Especially the counselling……. counselling people…….,. counsellors. Yeah. So I just want to help others, just to know just to be with others. Yeah, I love that. I love to communicate with others. So yeah, yeah. That made me take She is explaining why she chose to study the subject and her motivation and influences to choose the subject. She is explaining how her likes go along with the subject.
this as a profession. T14 So now has your idea of your passion for psychology ever changed? Has it been reduced because of the new environment? Or is it the same? Like, just because you're studying in a new college? You feel like, you know, okay, my passion towards it is not the same as it changed over time. Since she mentioned she doesnt like the subject. This question gives the client insight on how the love for subject has changed in the past years and how it is now. A14 yeahhhh,...... It has changed over time. That I feel like how I'm going to feel it feels like all the time. I feel like I don't want this profession to be continued. But anyways, no ways to like, take……. but though it's no, like, I don't have any problem with this. Subject, I'd have a problem with this. Current situation like current place. She sighs before starting to answer and she recollects her thoughts and starts answering and stammers while she answers. She explains how her problem is not the subject but the place T15 Okay. Okay. So do you think that if you would have been in a better college where the rules were relaxed? You would have loved the subject? Rephrasing to be assured that what I understood was right. A15 Of course, yes. Because I, I took this counseling because of my interest and not. Anyone force me to do it…… It's all up to me. She is explaining why she choose the subject and how she thinks that passion has reduced due to the institution she studying in. She stammered forming the sentences. T15 Okay. So is there something you would like Asking whether she wants to add
T17 Thank you for coming…! Greetings and winding up SESSION SUMMARY: The session went on quite well. The session started off by Rapport building. The client didn’t seem to speak much. So I was asking a lot of questions for the client to open up. The client didn’t maintain eye contact while she was speaking about the academic stress. She was quiet enthusiastic about telling her experiences from her previous college. She has difficulties adjusting to the new college. Although she acknowledges the fact that transition will be difficult, she kinda hasn’t accepted the fact. She stresses about rules and regulations of the college and how she thinks it’s affecting her from having fun. And I asked a few repeated questions just to be clarified with the facts that I understood her well. INTROSPECTIVE REPORT: I realized that dealing with clients who don’t speak a lot or who don’t want to open up is difficult. I had to ask lot of questions from my side for them to speak. Although she spoke very well when it was something of her interest, example her UG college. So every time, I felt like she wasn’t opening up I would bring back the conversation to how her Previous college was and she would be comfortable speaking about it. And that also helped to some extent. The client has difficulty settling and accepting the reality of the transition.
