Completing the interview/presentation process during the second half of the course helped me learn a lot about myself and my Miskasowin. I realized that I have strong communication and research skills, and I can effectively present my ideas to others. For example, during my research about the YMCA organization, I discovered that it is a non-profit organization that provides various programs and services to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities. I also learned that the YMCA focuses on inclusion and diversity, which aligns with my values of promoting equality and respect for all. Additionally, Miskasowin is a Cree term that means "finding one's own sense of identity and purpose." Throughout the course, I was required to complete an interview and presentation process about a specific organization or topic. By completing this process, I gained a deeper understanding of myself and what motivates me in my academic or professional pursuits. For example, I discovered new interests or skills that I did not know I had before. Through the SILEx work that I completed throughout the term, I further developed skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. For instance, when I was researching the YMCA, I had to analyze and evaluate different sources of information to understand their mission and values. Also, when I faced challenges in my research, I had to adapt and find alternative solutions to overcome them. These skills are essential for future job opportunities, and the SILEx work helped me to strengthen them. SILEx stands for Self- Identified Learning Experience, which is a method of learning where students reflect on their own learning experiences and identify skills and knowledge they have gained. Through the SILEx work that I completed throughout the term, I developed job skills that will be valuable in the future. Here are three examples of job skills that I developed: Communication skills: By completing written assignments, presentations, and participating in discussions with my peers, I improved my ability to communicate effectively with others. Critical thinking skills: Through analyzing and synthesizing information, I developed critical thinking skills. For example, I evaluated the credibility of sources or analyzed the implications of a particular decision or policy. Time management skills: Completing assignments and meeting deadlines requires good time management skills. By prioritizing my tasks and managing my time effectively, I developed this important job skill. If I were required to complete this activity in the future, I would allocate more time for practicing my presentation skills. I realized that I needed more practice to improve my delivery and engage my audience effectively. Also, I would gather more feedback from my peers and mentors to enhance my presentation. I found that I struggled with time management during the course, and I would benefit from breaking assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks. Alternatively, I could reach out to my peers or instructor for support and guidance earlier in the course. By identifying areas for improvement and developing strategies for success, I can improve my outcome in future courses or activities.
Watching the presentations of my circle group members taught me a lot about different organizations and their impact on individuals and communities. From the presentation about the YMCA, I learned that it is a great platform for individuals to develop their skills and build a sense of community. From the presentation about Illume Wellness Spa, I learned about the importance of mental health and self-care in our lives. From the presentation about Whitby Football Club, I learned about the significance of personal responsibility and goal setting in achieving success. Overall, these presentations broadened my perspective and inspired me to contribute positively to society.
