It is your responsibility to ensure that you take adequate precautions to protect your health

1. Students must behave respectfully towards all individuals in the lab and follow any
instructions given by the lab instructors. Failure to comply with these regulations may
result in expulsion from the lab.
2. The lab must be kept clean at all times. You are responsible for your equipment and
cleaning of benches or tables used in the lab.
3. Access to the laboratories is permitted only during regular scheduled lab hours unless
permission is obtained from an instructor. Students not registered in biology courses are
not to be admitted to the labs at any time, for safety reasons.
4. If an accident occurs (no matter how minor) contact the instructor immediately for
appropriate first aid.
5. If a breakage or spill occurs, contact the instructor immediately for advice on safe clean

any chemicals. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, face, etc., while working in the
laboratory, and avoid breathing harmful vapours.
8. Wash hands regularly and before leaving the lab with soap. Use paper towels to shut off
the taps after drying your hands.
9. Dispose of waste materials in the proper manner as instructed. Do not pour chemicals
down the sink unless you are told to do so.

  10. Special labelled containers are used for disposal of the following: broken glass, cover slips; sharp objects (razor blades, needles, etc.); flammable chemicals, hazardous chemicals, biohazard material. If you are unsure where to dispose something, ask a lab instructor.
  11. If you touch a hazardous substance you should immediately keep your hands under running water.
  12. Wear appropriate clothing: long pants, closed toed shoes, long hair tied back. If you do not have the appropriate lab attire you may not be allowed to enter the lab.
  13. When required, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as directed by your lab instructor including lab coat, goggles and gloves. You must stay in the designated area with gloved hands and lab coats. Do not handle other items in the lab or your personal items with contaminated gloves.
  1. No food or drinks (including water) are permitted in the laboratory. If you need to eat or drink during your lab, you must remove your PPE, wash your hands and then step out of the lab. All food and drink items must be stored in your bags or on the designated shelf in the lab.
  2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth or any other part of your face while you are in the lab. HANDLING BODY FLUIDS A few labs in the Biology 1160 and 1260 courses involve the handling of body fluids and tissues, including blood. It is vital that you, as a future nurse, become accustomed to using the proper procedures when handling these fluids. This handout outlines the general policy for handling body fluids and the equipment used during these labs. Safety Guidelines
  3. When handling body fluids, using equipment that comes into contact with body fluids, or working on a surface that may be contaminated by body fluids, you must wear gloves and lab coat. These are provided for you in the lab.
  4. Always use your own fresh pair of gloves and discard them in a biohazard container when you are finished with them.
  5. All work surfaces must be disinfected with 10% bleach solution before and after doing an experiment with body fluids.
  6. All equipment must be cleaned with 10% bleach solution or put in the appropriate disposal container after use.
  7. All disposable materials (paper towels, alcohol swabs, etc.) that may have come into contact with body fluids must be disposed of in a biohazard container – not a regular garbage can. This includes paper towels used to clean work surfaces.
  8. Re-usable materials and sharp items (e.g., scalpels, blood lancets) that may have come in contact with body fluids must be placed in the designated container described in the specific procedures that accompany the experiment.
  9. All procedures involving body fluids must be carried out in the area designated for the experiment, and you should never take equipment or materials out of that area. Only those students actually performing an experiment are permitted in this area. All other students must stay outside of this area.

laboratory at all times. Please access them if you require more detailed information about any of the products that you are required to use in the lab.

3. Education and Training Programs This component of WHMIS instructs and educates workers concerning the content, purpose and significance of labels and Safety Data Sheets. All University employees who work in the laboratory have some training on WHMIS and should be able to assist you with your questions.

2) LABORATORY ATTENDANCE POLICY

  1. You are required to attend all labs and to complete the laboratory. Any missed labs without a valid reason will receive a mark of zero for that lab and its related activities and quizzes (pre-, in- and/or post-lab).
  2. Three or more missed labs for any reason will result in failure of the laboratory portion of the course.
  3. If you have a valid reason for missing a lab, it is your responsibility to contact your lab instructor that day if you want the absence excused. Official documentation signed by a person with authority does not guarantee an excusable absence, but may be requested. The decision as to whether the absence is excusable is at the discretion of the lab instructor. If the lab instructor determines that you have an excusable reason for missing the lab, then one of the following will apply: A. if lab time and space permits, you may be able to attend another lab session, in which case the lab will not count as a missed lab. B. if this is not possible you will be excused from completing the lab and your marks will be based on the remaining labs. The absence will count as a missed lab.
  4. All lab activities and quizzes are to be completed and submitted by each student individually, even if the activity is carried out in partners. Be very careful to avoid plagiarism.
  5. You are expected to arrive on time, with assigned pre-lab activities completed. Arriving late or unprepared is inconsiderate both to the lab instructor and to fellow students who will be working with you. The lab instructor will determine whether a late student will be permitted to attend the lab. If you are not permitted to attend the lab, it will count as a missed lab, and rules 1–3 above will apply.

Under no circumstances will a student arriving more than 30 minutes late be allowed to attend a lab.
