QUESTIONS:
1. What is the topic of the team presentation today?
The topic of the team presentation today is “Sustainability in Supply Chain Management”.
2. Why do sustainable supply chains matter?
Sustainability in supply chains is important because the supply chain accounts for the majority
of a company's environmental effect. The supply chain requires an immense amount of energy
in production and transportation as products are manufactured and shipped throughout the
world. As a result, companies that apply sustainability in their supply chains can make
significant differences compared to their competitors. Some benefits that sustainable supply
chains bring to companies are:
- It can be affirmed that sustainable policies not only help businesses protect the planet
but also bring financial benefits in the long run: Saving operating costs. A sustainable strategy
can significantly optimize costs and have a significant impact on profits. Sustainable businesses
can also enhance their position and relationship with the government and local communities to
access preferential policies and tax subsidies.
- Sustainable supply chains also have a direct impact on a brand's reputation. Brands can
add a lot of value. This will be a competitive advantage that attracts consumers àn investors by
becoming more sustainable. A business with a sustainable supply chain will build solid trust with
partners and potential investors. In a new era where sustainable values are increasingly being
emphasized, investors often stay away from companies with scandals and no societal goals. ->
Sustainable supply chains (Environmental and societal responsibility) create chances of making
potential partnerships.
- Sustainable supply chains can reduce environmental impact by, for example, replacing
plastic products with paper ones. Moreover, focusing on sustainability makes the company have
more corporate social responsibility (CSR) by designing a new supply chain that will reduce the
rate of greenhouse gasses or CO2 from the transportation process. Thereby, that contributes to
a circular economy as well as sustainable development of the triple bottom line (profit, people
and planet).
3. Consider the global supply chain of coffee. Give an example of social sustainability
in the global supply chain of coffee that can be applied?
Vietnam is the second-largest exporter of coffee in the world. Joining the global supply chain is
an efficient way to effort the production of Vietnamese coffee. However, besides the quick

Give an example of social sustainability in the global supply chain of coffee that can be applied? Vietnam is the second-largest exporter of coffee in the world. Joining the global supply chain is an efficient way to effort the production of Vietnamese coffee. However, besides the quick

development, we should consider much about social sustainability, which is about social issues such as human rights, living conditions, health, safety, wellness,... Therefore, there is a clear example that can be faced when producing coffee that is about labor. The coffee beans had been processed in many processes to be ready to sell in the market. From planning trees to harvesting seeds and other manufacturing processes. As a result, we desire a huge amount of labor to complete the process, especially in harvesting the coffee beans. In fact, we can see, in Vietnam, most of the labor in harvesting coffee in the farm is children or teenagers in minority communities. Children’s rights are violated, they must go to the farm and collect the coffee beans without education. Children have to work on coffee farms with overworked jobs and are exploited for labor, but they must do it to support their family’s finances.Nowadays, Vietnam and organizations have tried to protect children’s rights, especially children in minority communities that help them to have a better living condition. Solving this problem is a social sustainability effort for the global supply chain of coffee. To meet that, Trung Nguyen Coffee has implemented the supply chain towards sustainable development. The reason why Trung Nguyen is so successful is because it focuses on Suppliers - the first important link in the supply chain of every business, they provide input materials for the production process, from there affect the quality and price of output products. For Trung Nguyen, coffee beans are the main raw material. Trung Nguyen selects from 4 regions with the best ingredients: Robusta coffee beans Buon Ma Thuot, Jamaican Arabica beans, Coffee from the original homeland of Ethiopian coffee, Brazilian Coffee. With the advantage of being located in the coffee capital of Vietnam, Trung Nguyen has many advantages in purchasing raw coffee. The company has two purchasing methods: through private enterprises and traders and directly from farmers. With the first form, now private enterprises or purchasing agents face many difficulties, many agents default, directly affecting the supply and demand in terms of both quantity and quality. Therefore, Trung Nguyen restricts the use of this provider. Instead, the company has found a new direction for input materials, which is to invest and directly manage the farmers' own coffee farms, making coffee farms a part of their business activities. coffee business. businesses, thereby helping the company to take the initiative in strategic raw materials, contributing to strengthening the relationship between businesses and coffee farmers and limiting the problem of child labor. Trung Nguyen said that the coffee beans used by this company are purchased from small coffee farmers who have certificates of sustainable farming practices and the company buys them at preferential prices from these households. This has really helped a lot in creating jobs for people (society) as well as towards a circular economy and sustainable development between economy, environment and society.
