As known by all, applied linguistics is a contemporary term and it is still debatable whether it is a science or not. To understand this field comprehensively, one should consider its meaning, conduct a literature review, and read much. Accordingly, this paper will start what it
is applied linguistics, continue with history and literature review and finally, offer different sources and references to read. The aim of this paper is to provide a short review about the field of applied linguistics, its emergence and purposes. First, the paper will touch what is applied linguistics, Secondly, it will considered the literature review about the field of applied linguistics and lastly, the purposes of applied linguistics will be taken into consideration.
INTRODUCTION
How did the field of the applied linguistics occur? Before 1950s-60s, there were studies on linguistics, language, language teaching/learning process but there was no any field concerning the application or practicing of these fields. So, the field of applied linguistics has stemmed from this need. There were theories, of course, and practice of the above-mentioned fields but there was no any connection between theory and practice. Applied linguistics is a kind of bridge between theory and practice. Actually, the term applied linguistics is an Anglo- American coinage. The emergence of this term was firstly seen in the University of Edinburgh School Of Applied Linguistics in 1956. The development of applied linguistics as an academic inquiry can be traced back to the middle of the last century with the emergence of a number of research institutions and university departments (Harris, 2001-2). What is Applied Linguistics? There are of course many definitions about what it is. This paper will consider just a brief of these definitions. By Oxford, applied linguistics is defined as “an interdisciplinary field which mediates between the theory of language and the practice of language learning.” It is also an overarching field that includes second language acquisition (SLA) and, as such, can shed light on the teaching and learning of a second or foreign language (Oxford).
Applied linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of linguistics that identifies, investigates, and offers solutions to language-related real-life problems (Klapper, 2009). As stated by Cook (2003, p.12),
“Applied Linguistics investigates real-world problems involving language. As such it has the difficult task of mediating between academic expertise and lived experience, attempting to reconcile opposed interests and perspectives. This clearly written introduction provides a concise but comprehensive overview of the most pressing and

CONCLUSION
The field of applied linguistics is a new field and need to be proved with many future studies. Although there are many conflicting views about applied linguistics, there is no end, that is, there is a huge road to go to reach a conclusion about the field of applied linguistics.
