World War I happened from 1914 until 1918. It was believed to be the war to ends all war, but then the reality hit them hard and another ‘world war’ occured, followed by the proxy war.
Reading the history of World War I remind me of the quote “start great things with small action”. It is remarkable that such a simple trigger can fire the whole continent to fight against each other, eventhough actually they were all come from one root, they were all part of the same family. 1 Saddening but can not be helped, as each of them grew separately and were influenced differently, plus the alliance system they used at the time. It is normal that they end up having no sense of belonging of the same family. After all, they were, at the time, becoming a part of another state, when nationalism started seeping through their heart.
The pride one state holds sometime can be destroying, too much nationalism. It is great to be such a nationalist, but we should be aware that we are not the only one in this small world. It is great to give much love and support for one’s state, but keep it under control as we should not let this love and support risk the world peace and stability. State still can be nationalist as much they want, but it is important to have right understanding on nationalism. The right understanding on nationalism would eventually help one state on advancing. Because the citizen is aware of their standing position and the state’s condition, whether it is in a good place or not, they would have the will and desire to participate in the process happening to bring their state forward.
Recruitment and training for youngsters, patriotic fervour they said. Many of them lost their right and chance to enjoy their childhood. Provocative advertisement everywhere, for the nation they said. Eventhough in reality, it is actually for the rulers, to keep their pride and hold their status in place. A lot left their family for war, only few were able to came back home. Such an unfortunate situation. The war had left a lot of scars for the states and its civillians, it was hurting both parties. It must be hard to live day to day when they were in war, not knowing when will all these would end, or even whether they will survive to see the sun tommorow or not.
But if we look at the other side, the war brought a lot more than just grief and loss. Without the war, maybe the imperialism and colonialism will continue and even more people will suffer. Without the war, we won’t be able to travel to a state named Finland or other state that gained their independence as the impact from the war. Without the war, technology advancement, especially in military, would be a step slower. Without the war, League of
Nations won’t be formed and there will be no United Nations like we know now. Without the war, the history text book might be a bit thinner, because with no first, there won’t be second. Without the war, things won’t be like they are now.
I think the idea behind League of Nations, collective security, was brilliant. It is good to see that people started to think more of the common interest rather than to secure their own interest. As time goes by, we can see that the whole world started to have the same idea on the ideal way of living, peacefully side by side. This rising awareness, i believe, was a great start. But in other side, it is important to remember the sovereignty each state hold. Eventhough it said to monitor, even to impose order and prevent war by punishing agressors, it is important to keep in mind that every decision made by each state’s government is their portion to take care of; so the attempt to keep the peace and stability should not restrain a state from doing their ‘business’. Other than that, it is also vital to specify and have the same idea on which move is a risky and most likely will disturb world peace, and which is not, to prevent misjudge and miscalculation on the action taken later on.
The title ‘world’ was not thoroughly right though, more like ‘european’ as the parties involved was limited in the Europe continent. It did not give much impact to states in another continent, such as Asia. I think that is partly because the said continent was more advancing rather than others, or the states or territories outside the Europe continent was already colonized and were under their control.
Moreover, the war had set new record on history. We also should always remember the war as so many people had sacrificed their life for the war, for their respective state, and that is worth to be praised and appreciated. As what Martin Gilbert written in “The First World War A Complete History” (2014), “All wars end up being reduced to statistics, strategies, debates about their origins and results. These debates about war are important, but not more important than the human story of those who fought in them.” It is such an unfortuneate that such war happened before, butif we look at the big picture, the war had its own “good side”, as everything happens for a reason.
