Activity 1
Electrostatic Relay
Objectives:
After the activity the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate charging by friction; and
2. Explain the process of charging by friction.
Materials:
Balloon/ Shredded Paper
Celluloid Film/ Plastic
Procedure:
1. Rub the balloon on a cotton/woolen cloth.
2. Do the same with the celluloid film.
3. Let the balloon attach under the celluloid film and do the relay.
4. First group to transfer 5 balloons will win.
Guide Questions:
1. On what materials did you rub the celluloid film?
2. What problems did you have while doing the relay?
3. Do you think the longer you rub, the easier will the balloon attach?
4. What do you think would happen if you would rub balloon rather than the
celluloid film?
5. If you are to imagine in the atomic scale, how does charging by friction actually
happen? Explain.
Conclusion
Imagine charging by friction, Illustrate how electrons would transfer in the
process.
