Headsets I get out of my apartment. Have a long day ahead. It is early in the morning. I might have forgotten to take breakfast. Maybe I woke up late and had to take a quick shower. Maybe it is raining and I left umbrella or even my wallet, but not my headsets. I have my headsets on. I’m connected. The first song that I play is going to tell me about how my day is going to be. It is a secret game that I have played for a while. I play a random song as the first thing that I do after going out of my place and what the song is about is how my day will turn out. It is a stupid game but I like it. My headsets allow me to play this game and some others. I chose this item because it is an object which is much related to some of my favorite forms of art: music, sound, and radio. This object reflects who I am because by using it I’m able to practice some of my favorite hobbies, which include listening to music, designing sound works and composing music. Furthermore, headsets allow me to take with me my music everywhere I go. Why Headsets? I will explain. Headsets are my second ears. They are my second most direct connection with the fascinating world of sound. Because it is not just about music, it is also about having someone on the phone, or listening to an audiobook or a podcast without disconnecting from my-self. This ‘connection’ is a concept that interests me particularly; because it is both a form of being connected and disconnected.
I will talk about the connection in the first place. Headsets allow me to get through my inner self. They are circuits and cables that bring to me a stimulus: a sound, a song, a message. Throughout Synaptic communication (the cell communication mechanism in which ‘one end of a neuron, upon stimulation, generates an electrical gradient called the action potential. The action potential propagates over the axon toward the other end of the neuron , where this action potential produce chemical signals (neurotransmitters) that diffuse in the synapse to stimulate the next neuron) my brain will receive the stimulus and transform it into a reaction and an interaction. Sound travels through my second ears and gets me to a secret place inside myself that makes me feel (however it would make me feel) something: anything. They are indeed an extension of my body. Just as when I carry a pocket camera and it becomes an extension of my eyes; my headsets extend my senses. Thus, they extend the way I perceive the world around me. They change my perception of the things, therefore they participate actively in the manner I construct the reality in my mind and even further, the mode I communicate and interact with others (society). Headsets are also a universal object, which means that they represent the same for several kinds of cultures. They connect people in a similar way music does. If I see someone in the street with his/her headphones on, I assume automatically that music means a lot for that person; even if we
Let’s say I just reserve the right to ‘connect-disconnect’ me from everything sometimes.
